WOMEN'S CHRISTIAN TEMPERANCE UNION.
MEETING AT PUKEKOHE, A successful meeting to inaugurate a local branch qf the W.G.T.U. was hejd on Friday afternoon in the Salvation Army Barracks, Mrs Neal, District Pres (Rent for Auckland, presided. The meeting opened with .devotional exercises'., after which Mrs- Neal spoke of the urgent need for the extension of the work of (the Women s Christian Temnermc 0 Union throughout the Dominion this year, in pre. iA pa rati on for U'e coming polk also ment'brin 0 ' tN-vt a number of new VhrarcKos had been formed both in tye South and North Islands during ’fcfce last few months. Miss Earnshaw, organ'iser for the 'W.C.T.U. spoke of the opportunities for service for women, both in c ?v,v «nd national litfei towards (the need for unity, and organisation in Ml effort? and the great opportunity through the work of W.C. T.U., with i.ts cireaJt “Do everything policy,” wh’-ch was. ''ifreduced by Frances WiUard, one of the first world’s presidents! The work cf the Union is carried out. by means of departments with a superintendent in charge of each. * These departments may be grouped in. six divisions, viz., Evangelistic, educational preventive social, legal obligatory upon any union, but all are strongly urged to work the three departments for children and young people and mothers along the lines of 'total abstinence andp urity. The chief aim cf the W.C.T.U. is the abolition of the drink traffic, and the speaker verged, 'in the words of Vicountess A?tor in the British Parliament. “Is temperance a question shat affects everyone. Iti is everyoxiels question, but most of all, it is a woman’s question. The meeting passed a unanimous vote “Th-*f a local branch) of t,he W.C.T.U. be formdd.” The following officers were elected : President, Mrs Ward ; vice-presidents, Mesdames Horne, Bycroft and Crosbio: bon. secretary.. ' It was decided that a branch of the Loyal Temperance Legion should be formed, and Mss Linda Perkins was nominated superintendent. Tbe membership numbers thirtythree.
