hour. The annual consumption would therefore amount to 73 million gallons. Quantity available from proposed source: The proposed, source of supply) is at a poin-t on the Wairere stream below its junction with a s Rightly smaller one on the 1 Totara Park Estate. From a compass survey I find 'that! the catchment area is 1000 acres. The mean annua! rainfall for the city of Auckland (which for our purpose may be assumed as equal to that at Manurewa) for the past 21 years was 45.92 inches, ranging from 74.15 inches in 1917. to 28.30 in 1914. It is usually assumed that owing to evaporation., absorption, etc... that only half this amount will 1 How off the area. For a year of mean rainfall (these figures give a. discharge of 520 million gallons available to supply a possible consumption of 73 million gallons. The rainfall for the six driest months of 1914 amounted to 8.70 inches which would give fo; that period 99 million gallons available to supply a possible consumption of 36 A, million, gallons. An actual guaging of the stream on April sth. at site of p'pnosed source gave a flow of approximately 25.000 gallons per hour, but guagings of this description are of very ]ilttle use unless taken regularly over long periods. I would therefore recommend. fn the event of your T3o;v d favourably considering this source of surplv. that a small inexpensive vry'r he constructed at oncei with this object I shall be pleased to lev von have sketches of such a weir. Qual’Hv: The water appears to bo palatable, free from colour,. taste and smel'. and not, hard, but 1 would recommend, that a chemical analysis and report be obtained as to its suifabil'ty. No sources of population exist on the catchment area, but these would unJobtedlv arise if d became mo; e closely settled. Conclusion : In my opinion more than sufficient, water than ,is required to supply your district can be obtained from the proposed source of | supply, but fur the; data dn "egard (o levels, etc., would be required be- : fore a defiirte scheme of storage,, reticulation and probable pumping plant could be decided upon. I would be pleased to go into tins matter if favoured with instructions f: oni your Board to do so. (Signed) R. G. SLY FI ELD. The matter was deferred for further consideration.
