OTAHUHU BOROUGH COUNCIL. The usuaL fortnightly meeting of the o,tahuhu Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers. Otahuhu, on Thursday, 25th May, at 7.30 p.m. In the absence of the Mayor (Mr Todd) the chair was occupied by Cr Clement. Present were : Crs Hall, Shepherd, Denn'son, Brady, Preston, Nicholls, Whj'tty, the town clerk (Mr Woods}.. A letter was received from the Auckland Hospital stating thajt in respect to the valuation of Ithe Borough of Otahuhu the total hospital levy would amount to the sum of £514 13 9c! 1 , to be paid in four equal quarterly payments.—Received. Pillion Riding, A deputation was received from the Otahuhu Motor Cycle Club, who asked that the by-law prohibiting pillion mi,cling on motor cycles be suspended. After listening to considerable argument in favour of pillion riding, it was pointed out that the by-law was framed on the recommendation of the police with a view t'o putting a stop to joy, careless driving, etc. It was finally decided tha(t the bylaw! stand. A complaint was deceived from Mr E. G. Hill, Clevedon Road, in respect to the bad state of the footpath in front of his residence. The clerk( Mr Woods) was instructed to inform Mr Hill that the work has been under consideration and will be proceeded with. Amusement Tax. A communication was received from the Borough of Gore asking that the Borough of Otahuhu co-op-erate and support at the next Municipal Conference that all amusement taxes collected in the district be pa,id over-’ to the local) body of that, district or the Town Board, as the case may be. It was decided to support the proposal. A letter was received, from, 'the One Tree Hill Road Board asking the Otahuhu Borough to depute two members to attend a meeting at a fime and place to be decided on, with a view to reforming the now defunct Local Bodies AssociationReceived. Westfield Smells. The Department of Health wrote stating that after inspecting Messrs Flejtcher and Sons’ sewer at its outfall, and! .the works of R. and W. Hellaby at Westfield, that everything had been done to abolish the smells complained of.—Received. Debenture Loan. An offer was received from the manager of the Bank of New Zealand offering to place the debenture loan of £4500 at 6F> per cent . The offer was accepted. A letter was received from the Hon. F. W. Lang in relation to the LocaL Bodies Finance Act,—Received. An account was received from the United Fire Brigades’ Association for 500 feet of 2% inch hose supplied at a cost of £66 13s 4d.—Passed for payment. Consolidated By-laws. Proposed by Cr Had and seconded by Cr Shepherd, that the by-laws be passed.- -Carried. * Moved by Cr Clement and seconded by Cr Nicholls that the by-laws became \v as from the sth .Jane, 19-2. Carried. Unm’mrc :3 Si reels. It *» at brought under the notice of the Council that there were at present two streets in the Borough without a name. It was decided that the road leading off Princess Street be named Bracly Road and the other stiect loading into the Tamalei be named James Street.
STATUTORY MEETING. ORDINARY BUSINESS. There were present a? the ordinary meeting of the Franklin County Council held on Wednesday, Crs W. Claud Mdtion (chairman), R. Wilcox, R. Lowry, G. W. Heald, J. Dean, B. Charles, E. C. Cuff, T. W. Woods, R. T. Reid, the County clerk (Mr Alan P. Day) and the County Engineer (Mr J. L. Me--Anthur). Local Bodies Finance Act. Tfyp N.Z. Counties Association requested the Council to forwad any amendments which in its opinion are considered desirable or necessary for the Local Bodies Finance Act, 1921. —Received. Undedicated Roads. v The Chief Surveyor advised that a portion of Market Street, Pokeno, had never been legalised, and requested the Council to dedicate same under Section 101 of the Public. Works Act. —The necessary action to be taken. Question of a Fence. Solicitor for Mr R. Rogers requested the Council .to revoke permission given to Mr H. Burrows top at hip fence out on the road a;t Puni, so that he could clean up his boundaray from blackberry. The writer stated the fence was a danger to traffic.— The engineer and Cr Woods to inspect and instruct the clerk on the ■reply to be sent. ' Water Reserve. The Comm’lssioner of Crown Lands stated the Council may have a five years 5 lease ofi Lot 74, section 3, Pukekohe Parish (Water reserve) for oOs per annum.' —On the -motoin of Cr Woods it was decided to lease the land for 5 years. Proposed Deviation. The County Solicitpr, Mr A. Hanna, w i;th the N.Z. Dairy Company in a few days the question of acquiring a piece of land for a proposed devi- ■ atiion on Paera'ta-Runciman Road. The amount required to. settle was £127 6s 3d.—Thle clerk was instructed to remit tiff's amount. Wkanagarata-Pokeno Connection. The Pukekohe Chamber of Commerce asked if the Council could .improve the road! between Whangarata and Pokeno as 1 the road at present in a bad state and was greatly llpd' by the residents. The, improvement of the road would be a great benefit and would be appreciated by -the many hundreds of people who pass over it daily..—lt was reported that the matter was ip hand and would be completed shortly. Karaka Station Matters. The General Manager of the New Zealfcnd Railways (Mr R. W. McVMIy) wrote with refernece to. the (representations made by a deputation that recently waited on the Prime Minister . (Rt. Hon.. W'. F. Massey) at Karaka and which have been referred to him for attention, regarding the p.rovisioh of a station* building there, he requested the Council to advise him as te its intention respecting the } constructing of ai subway and road approaches thereto. He referred the Council to his setter of 15th July.. 1921, and i'nforemed the Council that in addition to the subway the Council would also require to bear the cost of any roadways required. It was pointed out the Council cduld not undertake the work as it was far: too costly. It was decided Ito ask the Railway Department to provide same. PermissV'n to Remove Fence; Mr C. Y.xfiak, Patumahoe, requested permission to remove his fence on to the road, so that he could exterminate blackberry on his boundary. Permission was granted subject to the usual conditions.
