RUSSIAN RELIEF.
(To the Editor). Sir, —In view of Russia's great need it is unfortunate that' anything should be done 'tending to alienate public sympathy. That'/ an effusion such as that from the pen of R. H. D. Wily should -appear 'in the local press on the eve of an effort in Pukekohe and surrounding district's to do something for the sufferers is more than cruel. H. FI. D. V-dys letter heralds h’s ignorance at the movement in the Auckland district for Rub'dan relief, and is such as to fill the minds of the uninformed with suspicion. Fortunately for Mr Why hi, innuendo as to tire gentleman who lectured in the Premier Hall last evening is garbed with queries, and his “is” and “if" follbwed up by the assertion that “this Rusian relief work smells to me too much cl picpngancla.” Mr Rionn’us has stated to me emphatically that he was never carried out of the Town Hall at a meeting of Mr Massey’s. Mr Perkins, whose guest Mr Rfccharads was last Friday evening, says : “Germany was not discussed in his hearing;’ Whence the mud ? 1 and. those associated with
me in Pukekohe m Russia’s cause know that Mr Richard’s credentials are of the highest, and no' .attempt has been made publically or privately to win us for Bolshevism. As to e Russian famine the more excellent man is he who gets his shoulder to the relief waggon and not Ins carpbig brother. When I was introduced to this cause Lord 'Jel.bcoe was m the head. The Auckland committee, headed by Mayor Gunson, contains such names as E. C. Cutten, S.M.. C. 1. Nathan. Rev. Father Holbrook. Dr K. Lawry, Rev Cower W. G.Monk-t-n. .T. W. Wiseman and many ethers cl eqna' standing. The Pukekohe com-mit-ice consists of myself. Mr Mason as secretary, Mr Perkins, Rev, Cuwie, rir D. R. Hamdton. Captain Thomas, I\T - Cooper and others. Generally the •funds collected in the Auckland district will be handed over to Mr Gunson and from him to Sir Benjamin Robertson. We in Pukekohe wdl remit to Lord Jellicoe, who will send our money to the administrator ap no in tod by the British Government. Certainly good eneough for us. The lecture.’/of last evening is giving h;s services gratuitously in the great cause. Would that he had been permitted to make our acquaintance, d-> his work and pass on his way wchoiw such sorry salutations as H. H. !) - \y’«. - I am, etc., JOHN BOUTTif, Mayor, Pukekohe.
