BOROUGH SANITARY AFFAIRS.

PROPOSED DEPOT.

RESIDENTS’ OBJECTION.

In view of the expiry of the lease, over the present sanitary depot, the Borough Council was confronted wi,t^

the problem of obtaining another siiitable depot. However, it was fortunate in acquiring a leaseovW a property owned by Mr Matthew Robson, in Manukau Road, and which site was inspected by the Health Officer, who considered it a suitably one.

l y At last meeting of the Borough Council, a petition signed by fifteen residents in the vicinity, was received objecting to the Council’s intension of making a nightsoil depot at I the end of Manukau Road. The petition stated that the proposed site was within seven chains of five houses, and nearly all of these were dairy farmers. Owing to ( the necessity of keeping cream away from all cdours | the petitioners felt that placing a nightsoil depot in the suggested | place would be detrimental to their business, also from a public? health point of view. I A number of the petitioners wait* , ed on the Council in support of ,thacontents of the letter.

I The Mayor in reply, stated that the; Council must have.a nfghtsoili depot somewhere. He contended that the proposed site was very suitable, the soil being of a more porous and drier nature than that at the present site. The Health Inspector had I inspected the site and had expressed himself highly satisfied. It did not j matter where it was proposed to have the depot someone would object. It |was no more detrimental in depositing the nightsoil at Robson’s site, than it was to have the matter passing thei, houses in the streets at night' when the residents’ windows were open. The Council had no desire to push it on to any section of the community, but a site had to be obtained, even if the land had to be taken. Considerable discussion ensued. and eventually the matter was held in abeyance pending the result of an experiment with lime.
