DISTRICT NEWS.

BOMBAY. The Bombay anniversary picnic and sports were field in Mr Pople’s paddock oil' Monday, the 20th inst, when, in spite of the fact that the weather was very windy the rain kept off until night, and the picnic and sports were a pronounced success, many visitors being present from considerable distances. Starting about 10 a.m. the children’s events were run off continuously until each child had received a prize, after which toys-were distributed to the tiny ones, and; sweets were scrambled for. The sports programme commenced at about 12.30, and considering- that the entries were all post entries and the handicappng, etc., to be done on the ground, the committee are to be congratulated on the manner in which the upwards of twenty itmes on the programme were disposed of. The following are the results of the sports programme : Local Handicap, 100 yards—First heat, V. Frost 1, W. Flay 2. Second heat Pullar 1, W, Matthewson 1 2.. Final, W. Matthewson 1, V. Frost 2, Pullar 3.

Boys’ Handicap, 400 yards H. Flay 1, Ray Wootten 2, C Leatham 3. Returned Soldiers’ Race, 100 yards —J, Mill 1, A. Wray 2, W, Flay 3. Egg and Spoon Race—R, Parker 1, C. Pople 2, R. Evans 3.

Throwing down wicket—Won by W. Fahey, for L. Donovan. Tug of War, over 35 years v. under 35 years was won by the veterans with two straght pulls. Happy Valley challenged the winners, but were defeated with two straight pulls, being a good go.

The social in the evening was a great success, being crowded, The floor was in good trim, and. the music of Walker’s orchestra left nothing to he desired from a dancers’ point of view.
