IMPORTANT ROAD WORKS.

WINTER MONTHS APPROACHING. CR HAMILTON’S SUGGESTION. With the winter months approaching and numerous road works which require completing before the winter sets in, the roading staff of the Pukekohe Borough will be kept exceedingly busy during the next month or so. The urgency of the matter was brought under the Council’s notice at Monday’s meeting by the foreman, Mr S. J. Clews, who stated that so many works had been authorised the present staff would find it a difficult matter to have them completed before the wet weather sets in. He requested the Council to define the most urgent works so that these could be completed. In answer to the Mayor, Mr Clews said about 1500 yards of scoria were necessary. The Railway Department promised to. deliver two trucks of scoria per dajt

Cr Hamilton contended that this process was far too slow.. At the rate of two trucks daily it would take from 10 to 12 weeks to do the woi'k. He suggested and emphasised the necessity of carrying the suggestion out, that the Railway Department be approached with a view of getting two train loads of scoria delivered at once. To meet this he advocated hiring teams, lorries, and waggons and vehicles that could cart the material to where it was required. The work could be done quickly and they show something. This two trucks a day method did not appeal to him at all. He was satisfied that great assistance would be rendered by people residing on the variuos roads who had teams. It would be to their advantage to have the work done, so that they could gdt high and dry across to their properties. Among the works to be carried out include Nelson Street, Belgium St., Buckland Road blinding, Edinburgh Street, Me Guire's Road, and others, Cr Kennelly put in a claim to have Princess Street! attended to. This work, he added, had beeen promised some time ago. This matter aws referred to ithe engineer to call for the tenders for the formationwork.

The matter of arranging for a supply of scoria as suggested by Cr Hamilton was left in the hands of the Mayor to deal wSth.
