MUNICIPAL BAND UNIFORMS.

BOROUGH COUNCIL’S DONATION.

At Monday’s meeting of the Borough Council, Mr V. S. Roberts, representing the Municipal Band, waited on the Council and solicited monetary assistance towards the acquirement of uniforms for the hand. Mr Roberts stated thalt as a result of the bazaar, organised by enthusiastic ladies, £llO was netted. The band had a credit balance of about £SO to supplement the uniform fund Linking £l6O in sight. The contract price for the supply of (the clothing was £2lB, and they were short of the required amount. He asked if the Council could see ‘its way clear to assist financially. The Council, he pointed out, would, he took it, be trustee for (the uniforms, just as it was trustee for the instruments. If the Council would assist,, the band was quite willing to forego the annual £25 subsidy. He remarked that Mr T. L. Maxwell, who was the contractor for the uniforms, had made a really splendid job of them. They were getting- a) tailor made article made locally, and a much better one than could be procured elsewhere- at » puce 30s less than the next lowest tenderer who would have turned them out as factory made. The uniforms wive indeed a credit, and he assured the Council that the band was u credit t*> the town. He was -aot saying this just because,-he happened to be a member. The band had made great progress during last few months and there was no reason why it should not go ahead in the future as it had done in the past. V‘ ; -

Cr Armstrong said the reason for the success was because it was under good management.

The Mayor thought the band should be encouraged,. At the present time the finances of the Borough were badly strained. Cr Hamilton congratulated the band on the -progress it had made. Cr Daysh said the ladies who conducted the bazaar were worthy of many congratulations. while the public should be condemned for the poor support it gave therm. Cr Armstrong said the Council was duty bound to pay the annual subsidy, He thought a grant! towards the uniform fund should! be made.

The Mayor moved and Cr Hamilton seconded that the band be subsidised to the extent of £SO, The motion was carried unanimously. A motion was also carried to the effect that the Council appreciated the goc-d services the band had given to Pukekohe, also the ladies for their effort in raising £llO. Mr Roberts, in returning thanks, said the band would do alii in its power to help themselves. Tire uniforms will l>e worn by the bandsmen at 'the People’s Day of the Franklin Show, which is to-mor-row.
