ASTONISHING FIGURES.

GREAT BUTTER INCREASE, The following figures show the details of ;the export of New Zealand butter and cheese from each district for the twelve months ended November, 1921, and,, 1920.. The increase in 4 the quantity of butter shipped was remarkable.. While thq total export* for [the twelve months ended November 30th, 1920, was valued at '£3,908,988, the export for the similar period in 1921 was valued c t £9,994,739, an increase of over four millions The figures from Auckland are remarkable, £5,301,803 against £1,860,731 ; New Plymouth also shows a very substantial advance, £1,193,814 against £247,874. It must be remembered, howver, that the purchase made by the Imperial Supplies Department during the war period disrupted shipments from the various Dominion ports.

A well-known authority on these matters, on being approached by a NZ. Times representative to explain the huge advance in |the volume and the value of the Dominion’s butter exports in 1921 as compared with 1920, stated that it was due to the fact that so many of the factories had turned over from cheelse to butter. Normally, England imported about 220,000 tons of butted, but at the close of the war her imports had fallen from 70,000 to 80,000 ons. In view of thi!s shortage of 120,000 tons a year, the dairy factories were advised to produce butter rather than cheese, and a large number of them did so.

The large amount of army butjter held by the British Government under the commandeer had, however, been overlooked, he continued, and when the butter was thrown on the

market, the result was the iccent slump in butter prices. But the Imperial Supply butter had now been sold, and he did not think the slump would be long continued.
