FIVE-PENNY POSTAGE.

There is a qtrong probability that commencing with the New Year, the* letter postage to England and other Dominions will be sd' instead of 2 y 2 d, as at present (says the •Sydney Sun). . The Posttal Conference at Madrid has already agreed (that the postage between foreign countries shall, as from the New Year, be increased to a minimum of 5d per oz. (to be exact, 50 centimes on the gold franc basis), and it is considered thatthis rate will apply as between England and /the Dominions 1 !. The question whether there will be a dise in proportion as between Commonwealth States is a matter about which the Sydney postal authorities have no information. Though the increases to foreign countries is a matter of fact, no announcement has been made from Melbourne in regard to them, There appears to be a doubt in. the aiincts of the postal authorities as to vvhe ther exchange rates will apply.
