PAPATOETOE RATEPAYERS

REQUEST TO TOWN BOARD. IMPROVEMENT OF FOOTPATHS LIGHTING STATION ROAD. : i A deputation representing raUft payers of the western part of Pap{&* toetoe waited, upon the Town Board at its meeting last Tuesday to request that certain improvements Kd put in hand at the earliest opportunity. Among the requests it was asked that the footpath from the railway overhead bridge to Landon’s corner, and from there to Eade’s corner be levelled up and tarred and shelled; • also that the . Park Avenue footpath from Eade’s corner to Notion’s property be ' cleaned' and made suitable for pedestrian traffic, and that this be followed with tar and shell. It was also stated that a footpath was required along Portage Road. Plea of Unfair Treatment.

The petitions said that a considerable sum of money was levied from that part of the town area, which included Station Road West and the Green Park Estate, and that being the case they considered that a fair proportion of the rates should be devotud' to keeping the roads and footpaths on the western side in proper 'order.. There was a very dangerous corner adjoining Landon’s property, and the petitioners suggested thatlights of some description be placed at Eade’s and Landon’s corners, and another half-way to the railway station. The petition was signed by 27 ratepayers. In the course of a discussion that followed, one petitionoe rsafd that the footpath from Mr Pettit’s to Landon’s corner was a mere track, only wide enough for one person to walk albng it at a time.

Adjusting the Levies.

The chairman of the town Board (Mr Arthur W. Hall) (informed the deputation that the hill 1 on Station Road woud require to be leveled down and the footpath in some places would have to be raised. Levels had twice been taken, and estimates haid been given showing that the work would cost between £ISOO and £2OOO Permanent Improvements to the footpath could not be made until the evels were adjusted, and the work would entail too high an expenditure to be undertaken at present. He thought, that somethng could fbe] done in the meantme, and the mem* bers of the Works Committee were nstructed to make an inspecton with a view to supplyng the necessary particulars to the Board at a future meetng. With regard to the statement that the western side had' been somewhat neglected, the chairman said that a considerable sum of money had been spent on Portage Road this year, and proportionately more had been spent on the western side than on the eastern. Gas for Lighting. As to lighting Station Road' the necessity of this had been apparent for sometime, but the difficulty was to know what means tvas to be used for the purpose. Gas could not, because the mains had not ■ et been carried' across the railway line. It was suggested that the petitioners approach the Auckland Gas Company with the request that such extension be made..
