MANUREWA TOWN BOARD.
FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. • The Manuqewa Town Board met on Monday night, when there were present : Messfs T. J,. Cor in (chairman) C. H. Lupton, M. D. King, G. Gallagher, G. Smith, W. T. Cox and the clerk (Mr, H. Kay). HU! and South Road Intersection. At last meeting a deputation was appointee) to interview Messrs Hawthorn and Munro, owners of the corner at the intersection of Hill and Great South Roads with a view of ascertaining whether they would dispose of a portion of their property so (that the entrance to Hill Road could be improved. The deputation reported having carried out the interview, but the owners would not sell the property. They wrote offering to sell a piece 10 o.r 12 feet wide with a certain depth. It was pointed ouft that the owners in question contemplated building shortly, and the present was an opportune time to effect a purchase to improve the road. The corner is an acute one. The Board decided to again view the site before arriving at a decision. The Bowling Green. Some time ago the Board acquired a portion of land for Town Board purposes and constructed a bowling o-reen and croquet lawn thereon. It was proposed to lease the green and croquet lawn to the Bowling Club, but the question whether it was legal to do it his was raised. The Board is seeking the opinion of the Municipal
Association’s solicitor on the subject. A deputation from the bowling club waited on the Board in connection with the lease of the property. It was decided to lease the nowl. ling and: croque/t lawn to the club for a period of 21 years at the rate of 6 per cent, per annum on the value of the property, which was assessed at £3OO. The Bowling Club agreed to pay the interest on the value of,the improvements at the ruling rate of bank interest. It was pointed out that through removing a quantity of spoil from the tennis chub’s property the latter had been improved. The chairman said the contractor wanted spoil, arid he instructed him to take it flrom the tennis club’s land, which was adjoining. He told him the club wanted the place left level. This was cheaper for the Bowling Club, because spoil carted from any distance would have been more costly. It was decided to get the contractor to assess the cost of the work :done on the Tennis Club land, which work improved the property, and which made easy the work of laying down another court. It was stated during the discussion that the cost of laying down the bowling green and crjoquet lawns, and the work on the tennis courts amounted to about £SOO. . In answer to a question, the cnanman said the cost of constructing the netting fence at the tennis courts had been borne by {the Tennis Club. Mr Burbush stated that rihe Bowling Club had acquired a section ol land and intended to hand same over to the Board as a gift for croquet PU Other matters in connection with the bowling green were deferred until the next meeting of theßoar.u
Proposed Overhead Bridge.
In reply to the Board’s letter, the District Engineer of New Zealand Railways advised that the . cost of a road overhead bridge, including approaches, would be £3OOO, and a foot overbridge £IOOO. The above estimates were only approximate, and in the event of ithe Board deciding to go on with the work detail plans would have to be prepared before an accurate estimate could be arrived at. —The matter was deferred for the present.

At fast meeting of ./the Board it was reported that a pony, owned by a certain person, had strolled on to the bowling green, and extensive damage may have been done, but fortunately the damage was slight:. The clerk was instructed /to write to the person owning the equine, pointing out that if the pony did it again the owner would be held responsible for any ‘damage. The owner happened to be a member of the fail* sex, who wrote to the clerk as follows : “1 received your letter re my pony straying on the bowling green. Kindly inform your Board that they have made a mistake, as my pony was not on the green, nor waf; it running on the streets. The pony that had been on the green had shoes on, and my pony hasn’t had shoes on for months, so next time they accuse any one tell them /to make sure first, and also, if they were to watch all; the other horses that stray on the 'roads they would not have so much time to watch mine. There a/re a couple of horses on the roads every morning early, but they don’f bother to see them.” The chairman said the contractor put the pony out. There was no question as to whose pony it was. Town Clock. For some time past Messrs Ring and Lupton have been busy collecting subscriptions /towards a town clock.-* Already £47 14s has been received, with several amounts to come in. They were appointed a deputation to interview the postal authorities as to some suitable clock, and to obtain any suggestions from the department.
