COUNTY ENGINEER’S REPORT.

At - Thursday’s meeting of the Franklin County Council, the engineer (Mr J. F. McArthur) reported as follows :

Paerata Roads Loan. —The committee appointed met for ,the purpose of allocating expenditure on the different roads during the present summer. Provision having been made for the supply of a certain quantity of mqial, it was decided to allocate the expenditure over the dilferent roads to benefit all concerned: The following are the road's ahd length of same which are proposed to be, metalled during the present summer, viz., Helvetia to Paerata, 80 chains : Paerata-Tuhimata Road (station to Tuhimata) 160 chains; PukekoheRuncimari Road, junction to top of Sitewart’s Hill and Grey Street, 80 chains.

Application for Slaughtering License, Papakitra.—An application was received, by Mr Thos. Elliott, of Papa-, kura, for a slaughtering license in respect of premises on Lot 110, of sec-:' tion 1, Opaheke. The matter of site was referred to Crs Lowry, Heald, and myself for inspection and" report. The locality has since been inspected and no reason is seen why the license should not .be granted. The proposed site of the slaughterhouse is well away anti out of view of dwelling houses, and in our opinion should not be objectionable (to anyone in the neighbourhood. —License recommend©d» '**• Railway Crossing, Papakura.--The District Engineer of Railways has been approached regarding the alteration to level of line at its intersection with Boundary Road, between Papakura Town Board and Franklin County. The line has been raised above the original level, which will necessitate an increased expenditure when the road is constructed and opened for traffic. Tht District Engineer suggests that an application be made to the Department by your ( Council for a road crossing to oe constructed at the point referred to.— Agreed that the application be Kl Proposed New Road. —In connection with petition received frpm Mr A. L. Prew and six others and requesting your Council to obtain a report on a proposed new road from end to ‘Tooks” half-chain road' at Harrisville, to connect up wi\th R a zorb ack-V h angarata Road near Great South Road. A rough inspection was made, m being found that at least two miles ot new road would 1 have ,to be acquiied, fenced and constructed. As this would mean a greater expenditure than , could be met by general revenue a special loan would require to be raised. Before going to the expense of engineering, surveys, _ estimates, etc!, ijt was thought advisable to get the feeling, of the ratepayers included in the area of -sufficient cize and value, as security on .a roan to enable the proposed.road to be acquired, constructed etc.—A petition is now being circulated 1 for idiis pui--13056. Contracts Advertised. Contracts were advertised, tenders being returnable on the 31st October, 1321, for works as follows :—Contract Mo. 432: For it he supply and delivery ot 200 cubic yards of spawls,-FulceKOhe-Waiuku Road at Mauku, 'tender received from A. J. Moore, 12s 6d per cubic yard, £lB7 10s ; for the supply and delivery of 250 cubis yaras ol spawls, Pukekohe East to Drury Road, Comrie’s Hill, tender received from Maurice Ford, 12s 6d per cubic yard, £156 ss; Contract No. 502: For the supply and erection of wharf ana jetty ai: New Brighton, situated on the Haunaki Gulf, total engtn of wharf and jetty being 331 feet, tender received 1 from W. H. Taylor, contract price, £1995 10s 6d The three three tenders received being excessive ] would not recommend their acceptance. Tenders were called for other works, but no tenders were received. The tender s were referred to the engineer anid the members for the Ridings concerned. „ , Crushing and Hauling, Rolling and. Teams Plants.—The No. 1 stone crushing pant has been operating in the Drury district and has now proceeded to Ararimu. The No. 2 crushing plant is completing a 700 cubic yard heap ox stone for the Public Works Department at Patumanoe,

and is returning’ to Paerata and Karaka nex,t week to complete crushing the sifcone at Paerata and Karaka quarrys. The Aveling zfrm Porter steam roller has been engaged scarifying and rolling portions of roads in the Pukekohe East Riding, including new mental on Snieeds’ Road,’luakaup, also Hamilton’s Road, Buckland, and has now proceeded to i’aerata. After a few days’ work on this and Waiuku-Drury Road will proceed to Waiau, where several miles of metal road will be rolled. The No. 1 teams plant, afjter completing the construction of one and a half miles of Phpakura-Waiau Road, and other road works at Waiau, the plant has proceeded to Smeed’s Road, Tuakau, to undertake formation ready for metalling this summer. The No. 2 teams plant has completed Urquhart’s Road Landing at Glasson s, to hold 2000 cubic yards of stone and other road worfks at Karaka, and is now engaged forming ‘'Slacks moad, Fapakura. It is intended to send this plant to Mercer Riding about the end of next week to carry out longpromised works in and round Pokeno. The No. 3 teams plant is at present engaged constructing a portion of the Tramway Road from Ti Ti towards Puni, in the Mauku Riding. The 4 Thorneycroft motor trucks have been Frnaklin County eimaged during recent wet weather carting metal on to different loads for repairs, and have again. started the mqtalling of Whiri Whiri Road, Waiuku It is intended after this work is completed to metal ‘the halt chain road 1 , Harrisville, from the Br.ckland station, and then proceed to Karaka and convey metal for 3 miles to *he Papakura-Waiau Roacl, In connection with the conveying oi metal, I would suggest ,that it might be advisable ftp consider the calling of tenders for carting metal from some of the dumps jto roads where required. There is upwards of 10,000 cubic yards of metal to be conveyed for metalling new roads .this season, and should the season continue for a further period as at present I am afraid that some of this stone would remain uncarted. Tenders could be invited for say. cart.mg one and two thousand cubic yards of metal from the Paerata quarry on to the Tuhimata Road and Runciman Road, and 1000 cubic yards from Patumahoe on to the Patumahoe-Waiau Road. If 'tenders received are not a reasonable price they need) not necessarily be accepted. Metal to Waiuku by Rad.—The District Engineer of Public Works Department has been approached le-f-arding the conveyance of broken metal to Waiuku from Auckland by rail. Advice has been recieved that >tne Waiuku yards and approach roads thereto are not yet completed. It is however, \anticipia£ed that within two or three weeks sufficient work will have been done to enable metal to be dumped. . Proposed Deviation of Roads, Awh'.tu Riding.—During the past month tracings showing land proposed to be taken, roads to be closed and vested in exchange, and also severance in connection with the following deviations have been sent'to the property owners : Pollock to Awhigu Central, through Drummond’c, West Coast (to Pollock, through Hamilton s, Kohe Kohe to Pollock, through Meikle’s, and Munroe’s .Manukau Heads to Orua Bay, through H. Morrison s, A. Morrison’s, R. Morrison’s and' G. 1Howe’s. The report was adopted.
