PAERATA BALL.

(To the Editor).

Sir, —-In districts though only the size of Paerata there is usually to be found the individual who is waiting for a chance to find fault with anything that is arranged for the enjoyment of the. residents or the good of the district generally. In your paper of the 15h inst I notice a letter signed by “A Resident/’ who s|tates /that a few women put their heads together and are giving a re. turn evening to the returned soldiers of Paerata, without calling a public meeting of both sexes. I would remind “A Resident” that at the close of the enjoyable evening thqt the returned men gave to us, 'that it was announced that the ladies would give a reftum in the near future. Shortly afterwards a number of ladies got together and arranged to hold a further meeting at my house, where all those interested were welcome and invited to attend. I am sorry if “A Resident” was overlooked, as an endeavour was made to notify everyone interested in ithe movement. Now, Sir, why does “A Resident” complain if a few got together to .get * 'the thing going ? Some one had to make • a start, and why did’nt “A Resident” to work and call a public meet, if he wanted to. I presume “A is a man, and is jealous of the ladies taking the matter in hand, but I can assure him thait he can rely on them giving the returned men ns pleasant an evening as they gave us. They will do .their bes|t, at any rate. Although as “A Soldier” states in his fetter, the evening was given to bdth sexes, I am quite sure (the returned men don’t object to the ladies giving lihem a return. I might further state ithat my house was used for a meeting place, through lack of a hall, which this thriving and prosperous district does not yert possess, and never will while there are those in the district who hang back and find fault with everything. Let me assure “A Resident” that his letter has uot discouraged ithe ladies in their object, but has only drawn forth .from, them and the rest of Vhe residents (the contempt which lie (If. serves.—l am, etc.. r E, A. BUTCHER.
