The Times. Published on Tuesday and Friday Afternoons.

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 1921. BOROUGH ELECTRIC SUPPLY.

A good deal of dissatisfaction is being expressed by electrical consumers on the manner in which the current is being supplied from the local power house. It is certainly e>asperating in the extreme lo have the lights fail at the very time they are required most—but the consumers can hardly be aware of the conditions under which the current is generated, or hty would shift the blame from the power house staff to the tij.,nines? of the wone v market which is the cause cf it all. The

consumers have had, for some Time, the most economically'-produced furrent in the Dominion. With a power house equipment costing less than £IOOO they have, until«lately, been given a very fair service. One engineer, with other duties, to at' tend to, has been responsible for the plant and has not spared aimself night and day to serve the ratepayers. He has nursed the inefficient plant, carrying more and more consumers until the breaking point was reached, and the result was the cutting off on Friday last. But this is" the point to remember, the responsible officer has done kis best with the could not humanly do more—and the fault -must be placed fither at the door of the Finance Committee of the Borough Council or the Government restrictions on borrowing - money. The engineer has repeatedly warned the Council of the position, and beyond being told no money was available, no help was given. The breakdown, may be a blessing in disguise. It should result in the Council realising the position, and making a very desperate effort to place prepec equipment in the power house. It must be remembered that the electiical branch of The Eorough services is paying well, and now is the time to extend its usefulness, and allow it to earn much more revenue for the ratepayers.

“We nothing extenuate, nor aught set down in malice.”
