MISSION BUSH ROAD.

Sir, —Reply to report of County Council’s Sub-committee on blind byroad leading to Mission Bush Road. Yqui* report to the deputation fiorn the Waiuku Riding Ratepayers’ Association, which awaited on your Council during July. The report of your sub-committee was most unsatisfactory, as the information requested was withheld and a partial programme of the work carried ou. on this blind by-road, leading to the Mission Bush Road given We wished to ascertain the amoun: ox expenditure on this road during the last four years. Of the seven property (owners on this read, four are rtiern.beis of the Ratepayers’ Association, who strongly object to the expepdmuic of ratepayers’ money on the ■ rone, and private property. The formation, you state, is of a very light nature, yet three two-horse teama and four men were working tne re for several weeks. When * Messrs Williams, Hodgkinson and niyselt called upon the engineer and secretary, at the Council Chambers, dui i- n o May, and made enquiries re the money being spent there, the engineer informed us that it was no concern of the ratepayers where the mony was spent, Mr Hodgkinson protested against rates being spent on private property, as_ it was illegal The engineer replied he was not aware work had been clone on pi 1vate proprty, as he did not trave, teh full length of the road, the ground being so muddy Your subcommitee say the work was done hv the County Council teams, under the instructions of the engineer. How could such a thing be possible whn lie enineer told us he knew nothing about it, and at that time the formations, etc., were almost finished V Who is responsible .or the authorisation of the work, and why was the earth taken from the cuttings not placed in the holiow on the road, instead of being used in the -formation of about two chains o road on private property. Money has not been borrowed for this road, yet the sub-committee say they see nothing to take exception to It is the. only blind road in the Ridm„ that can boast of a portion being metaliled while many of the mam roads have had little or no attention. I thank ycu for your idea re Whitham and Williams road. Two or three years ago the member for the Riding -was asked to do a little to this road as it was in a bad condition, but the answer was money and labour was unavailable. Mr Williams offered to find teams and labour at a nominal figure and do the work himself, but ms otter was turnde down. If at some future time the Council decide to do a light formation on Whitham’s ana Wi Mams’ road and otherwise inapt ove our private property wo will be pleased to provide cur own earth. The next meeting of the Wamku Ratepayers’ Association will beheld in the Glenbrook Hall (date annunced later) and if the members of the sub-committee wish i 0 attend we sliaD be pleased to meet litpm —I am 6tc./ J. M. WHITHAM, Chairman Waiuku Ratepayers’ Asso. September sth, 1921.
