GOLF NOTES.

FRAFsIKLIW CHAIYE'PiQNSMEP RfIEETBWG. W. G. BROSNAHAN ; WINS MEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP. MRS CAMPBELL SMITH WINS LADIES’ CHAMPIONSHIP. (By “Mid Iron.”) Saturday last was a red letter day on the Pukekohe links, the, occasion being the inauguration of the Franklin golf championship. Nominations for the championship events were fairly satisfactory, but regret was expressed that Papakura was unable to be represented. Play commenced at 9.30 a.m. and at the luncheon adjournment the scores indicated that the ladies’ event was very open, but the men’s game had narrowed down to a struggle between Dr. Howden (Waiuku) and W. G. Brosnahan (Pukekohe), both of whose cards showed 88 for the first two rounds, the next best being handed in by \V. P. Hopkins. When the last hole was completed it was found that Mrs Campbell Smith had won the ladies’ championship, her card showing she had done thet last round in 89, which is a ladies’ record for the long course.

W. G. Brosnahan again did the two rounds in 88, Dr. Howden taking 100, and Brosnahan was therefore returned the winner.

Both Mrs Campbell Smith and Mr Brosnahan were heartily congratulated by the competitors and visitors present, as it was recognised that their play throughout the season had been of an exceptionally high standard and a championship victory was therefore quite in keeping. There was also a medal match and a bogey match run in conjunction with the championship events, A. Herrold (Waiuku) winning the former and Dr. Howden (Waiuku) the latter. In the ladies’ matches, Miss Duncan won the bogey match and Miss Allan the medal match.

At the conclusion of- the matches, the president of the Pukekohe Golf Club, Mr Jas. Roulston, before presenting the prizes won during the season, presented the following report:—

Y,our committee has pleasure in stating the past season has been the most successful in the history of the club. The membership is more than double that of last year, and the financial position is also in a mostsatisfactory state. Referring- to the championship, it was hoped next year to find both Papakura and Waiuku strongly represented, and it was the opinion of members that a Franklin Golf Association should be formed to further the interests of golf in the Franklin district.

The following prizes were then presented:— Franklin Championship : Men, Mr W. G. Brosnahan ; ladies, Mrs Camp-bell-Smith.
