DISTRICT NEWS.

MAUKU. The annual meeting of the Tennis Club was held on Saturday evening in Mr Garvie’s storeroom, the president (Mr J. H. Davies) presiding over a fair attendance. The report and balance sheet, showing a credit balance of £lO 15s 6d, was read and adopted. Mr Davies complimented the members upon the improvements they had made to the ground and thanked those who comprised the . working bees for laying down the new asphalt court. He also eulogised the work accomplished by the secretary (Mr V. W. Wright), whose untirjng efforts undoubtedly prove that" he has the welfare of the club at heart. Mr Davies feelingly inferred to the gi-eat loss the club had sustained by the death of the joint seci'etaiy and treasurer (Mr V. A. Wright). , A letter conveying the sympathy of the club had been 4 * forwarded to the relatives, and he expressed a wish that a motion embodying the feelings of the members be placed on record. This was carried in silence, all present standing. The club has now two asphalt courts, and a working bee has been arranged for Saturday, September 10, to push on the work of laying down a sand coqrt. The next work to be undertaken will be the erection of a pavilion, but owing to the lack of funds, it was decided to ask all members and intending members to forward their subscriptions as early as possible, and thus enable the work to be done befoi'e opening day, this date to be fixed later. The. subscription was fixed at £1 for gentlemen, and 10s for ladies. A very hearty vote of thanks to Mr Garvie, for the. use of the room and light, was carried by acclamation. Mrs George; in heri/usual, style/rendered two vocal items, which met with splendid appreciation and were heartily encored. The 'committee deserve great praise for the manner in which they catered for their guests. A sumptuous supper was' supplied and the social did not conclude until the small hours of the* morning, when everyone left, feeling they had enjoyed their night’s pleasure.

TUAKAU.

VICARAGE TO BE ERECTED. . A movement ..Is on foot to have a vicarage erected at Tuakau ana a special committee of the vestry has been set up to arrange plans and specifications. A systematic canvass of the district is being made to raise funds. We understond that a monster bazaar will be held in the near future. SUCCESSFUL SOCIAL., Thare was a very large attendance at the Church of England social held in Revell’s Hall on night to welcome Rev. W'. N. Bedweff, formerly of Nelson, who has taken over the charge of the Tuakau parish, until recently presided over by Rev. Foulkes, who has gone to St Hellers Bay. Representatives from all parts of the district were present including representatives from the various denominations. Details were complete and the function was arranged without the slightest hitch, which reflects great credit on the ladies of the church. Mr G. Palmer presided, and extended a hearty welcome to the guest of the evening. Addresses of welcome were also given by Mr Dynes Fulton, chairman of the Tuakau Town Board, on behalf of the citizens; Rgv. Father O’Brien, on behalf .of the Roman Catholic fraternity, and Rev. Nicholl on behalf of the Presbyterians. Rev. ‘ Bedwell suitably replied. ALTERATIONS TO PRESBYTERY. The alterations to the Roman Catholic Presbytery are nearing completion and the presbytery will be ready for occupation in about a fortnight s time. The ' alternations will greatly add to the appearance of the building and will be a credit to the street.

DRURY. The last ‘meeting of the Drury Band of Hope was very well attended when Mrs Harrison Lee Cowie gave a splendid address on the evils of the drink traffic and showed the difference in the expenditure in Great Britain on certain articles of food, clothing, etc., and on that in intoxicating drink, by the aid of strips of ribbon of different length. Food, clothing and other necessary articles were represented by inches ancl drink (ever 400 millions) by yards. Mrs Cowie strongly urged every one to record their vote at the next election for prohibition. A few items and a dialogue were given by the children. Mr Beams? of Papaku'ra .presided and sung “Ora Pro Nobis” and Miss Beams gave a pianoforte solo and a very pleasant evening closed with a hearty vote of thanks to Mrs Cowie for her visit to Drury.

A large congregation assembled at the Drury Presbyterian Church on Sunday, August 28, when the Rev. Hales preached a memorial sermon for the late Mrs Strang, at the close of the service, the “Dead March in Soul” was played, while the congregation remained standing, as a mark of respect for the deceased. Another farm has .just' changed hands at a very good figure, making the third in this neighbourhood in abuot three months. According to the prices paid for them, there does not seem to be any slump in land vet. The first bonus cheques from the New Zealand Co-Operative Dairy Co. have arrived, and proved very acceptable, and the suppliers are waitingvery patiently’ for the second one, which has been promised sometime in October. The cans are coming in fast, and the creamery is running every day, and has started to make casein. Some of the suppliers are taking back some of the skim milk to feed the calves with, as they find the whey is not. 1 much good, even when calf-food is added to it. There are lots of calves being killed this season.
