PAKURANGA HUNT CLUB.
| STRENUOUS CHASE AT TAMAKt. j j - | ONLY ONE FOLLOWER FINISHES. |r I NIGGER'S FINE JUMP. | j j The meet of the Pakuranga Hunt [ Club was held on Saturday, August | j 13, at Kelly's corner. East Ternaki. | To those who rode during the day the ! occasion will always be memorable, j not only for the splendid runs that i took place, but also for the strenuous i chase at the end —a veritable steeplej chase over wire fences. Out of the 1 sixty followers that were mounted ten started but only two finished. | Hounds were thrown off in Me ! IT. Swaffield’s paddock, and they drew ■ || a blank. Inen a. start was made m I j Mr Leighton’s, and a hare was soon i found. It gave a good run, but final|l [y got away. Another start was ! I'made in Mr Baker's farm, and a good J run resulted, but puss succeeded in j running into forbidden country, and nothin? eventuated. I | The Chase. Hounds were then lifted and taken through Mr Gordon Gil lard's, and on to Mr Ross’ farm, where a fine, strong hare was put up and gave the run of the day. Away it went across the road and led the way over the fiat and up to the Whitford hill. It turned in Upton’s and took the followers through country that had never been hunted before. About 20 wire fences were negotiated by those 1 who kept up with the hounds, but this was only a small number, and j from the ton huntsmen who were close up shortly after the start the
field gradually became more and more select until on the Whit ford hills, where all the fences were of wire, only two were following. Then a ! seven-wire fence, just erected, was j taken by only one rider. He cleared j j without touching, and just then the ! hounds turned, and he repeated his performance of a few minutes before. ! Seeing that the horse had hunted over some ten miles of country durino the earlier part of the da\. its performance on this occasion .was highly creditable. It had cleared over fifty jumps before the tests came. The last part of this run was over country consisting of swamps, hills, gullies and bush. All that followed were run to a standstill, and were thoroughly satisfied when the end came. The hounds ran like hounds and scent was good, A tremendous expanse of country v, as hunted over, the following farms being included: Messrs Swaffield s, Leighton’s, Matthews’, Langdon’s, Waters’, Walts’, Harrison’s, Bakers. I. and G. GiUard’s. W. Bellingham’s, Kelly's, Ross’, McCathie’s, Oh Ison’s, Upton’s, Rodeaway’s, Blake’s, Bathe’s and White’s. The Fliers. Among the fliers were: Messrs C.j Lamb, on Nigger; J. P. L.
