A curious operation performed by a well-known local surgeon was mentioned recently. It appears that a resident of Gisborne owned a prized parrot, which had been in the family for some thirty years. The bird, in the course of its capture, had sustained a severe injury to one wing, the member, never useful to the bird, became swollen and obviously gave great pain. The owner, apprehending the parrot’s death, sought relief for it, and the doctor offered to operate at the owner’s risk. An anaesthetic was administered in the usual manner by the nnaethetist, and the operation of amputation was successfully carried out. The bird is now doing well, and though as yet unable to undertake the acrobatics dear to the parrot, is rapidly regaining his accustomed cheer.
