TOTE PERMITS.

COMMISSSOM’S NEW LEST.

NEEDS PARLIAMENT'S VOTE

The new distribution of permits for tote race meetings is the recommendation of the Commission which recently visited Pukekohe and other places. It was submitted to the Minister and made available for public- perusal at Wellington on Saturday, but it does not take effect until it has received the approval of Parliament, and Parliament may possibly amend it. In the case of some notable clubs from which permits are withdrawn the Commission finds bad management, or suggestions of a proprietary element and profit-making', or overlapping with contiguous clubs which are themselves capable of catering for the needs. The Commission recommends that the number of days on which the totalisator may be used be increased from 289 to 316, as follows:—Racing clubs, 223 (at present 214); hunt clubs 15 (at present 16), and trotting clubs 78 (at present 59). Auckland loses eight days’ racing in some directions and gains in two others, made up as follows: — Avondale Jockey Club loses four days, Otahuhu Trotting Club loses four days; Auckland Trotting Club gains two days.

The following table shows the present permits held in the Auckland district and those now recommended:—
