BRIDE HAD A FALL.
A little boy .who had won a prize; for' learning Scripture verses, and was greatly elated thereby, was asked by a minister if it took him a long time to commit them.
“Oh, no,” said the boy, boastfully; “I can learn any verse in the Bible in five minutes.” “Can you indeed?” “And will you learn one for me?” “ides, sir.” “Then in five minutes from now I would like very much to. hear you repeat this verse,” said thp minister, handing him the Book and pointing out the ninth verse in the. eighth chapter of Esther. “Then were the king’s scribes called at that time''in the third month, that is the month Sivan, on the three and twentieth day .thereof; and if was written according to • all that Mordecai commanded uifto the Jews, and to the lieutenants, and the deputies and rulers of the provinces which are from India unto Ethiopia, an hundred ‘and twenty-seven provinces, untc every province according to the writing thereof, and unto every people after their language, and to the Jews according to their writing and according to their language.”. Master Conceit entered upon his task with confidence, but at the end of one hour, to hismnortification, could not repeat it without a slip. THE EIGHT LAD. . j . ~~~ A certain Edinburgh doctor was; something of a ventriloquist,, and it befell that he wanted a boy to assist in the surgery who mush necessarily be of strong nerves. He received several applications, and when telling a lad* what the, duties were, in order 'to test his n'erves, he would say, while pointing to a grinning skeleton standing upright in a corner. “BaK of your , work will be to feed the skeleton there, and while you are here you might as well have a try to do so.”
A few lads would consent to a trial, and receive a basin of-hot gruel and a spoon. While they were pouring the hot mess into the skull the doctor would make his voice appear to proceed from the jaws of the bofiy customer and gurgle out, “G-r-r-r----gr-h-uh, that’s hot.” This Was toe
much, and, without exception, the lads dropped the basin and bolted. The doctor begap to despair of ever getting' a suitable helpmate, until a small boy came, and was given the gruel and spoon. 1 After the -firs* spoonful the skeleton appeared tsay, “Gr-r-r-rh-uh, that’s hot !”
Shovelling the scalding gruel a: fast as ever,, the lad rapped the skui and impatiently retorted, “Vyeil, -jis blow on it, ye auk.l bony!” The doc tor sat down, and fairly roareti, bu he engaged the lad.
Only a foot lets people take him ij after he has founu them out. '
