GROWTH OF TAMAKI WEST.
POPULATION TREBLE©. DURING LAST TEN YEARS. A few figures in connection with the growth of Tamaki West will snow that, this district has kept pace with the general tendency to progress made by other suburban districts of the City of Auckland. During the past twelve months building permits to the value of more than £40,000 have been issued by the Tamaki West Road Board, and the recent census shows that during the last decade the population has increased threefold. The Road Board is pursuing a progressive policy, and loans for electric light, tar sealing of roads, and a concrete embankment and roadway round the waterfront have been carried., The contract for the electric light is to be completed before January 1; 1922. St Heliers-Kohimarama Progress League has in hand at the presenttime a scheme for beautifying the district by planting the cliffs with pohutakawa and silver birch, and along the waterfront will be a belt of trees alternating with Norfolk pine and Phoenix palm. To carry out this work it is proposed to canvass the district in an effort to raise £IOO py public subscription, and the Road Board to further encourage the work has donated £4O towards the protection of the trees. Mr Pearson, of the Auckland City Council’s landscape gardening department, visited the district recently and is drawing up plans. As soon as these are submitted the work will be carried our with all due expedition.
