COUNCIL AND STONE QUARRIES.

WORKS COMMITTEE’S REPORT. The Wojrics Committee reported at Monday’s meeting of the Borough Council as follows with regard tto inquiries made regarding stone quarries :—“After careful inspection of Paerata quarry, as surface indications would permit, and taking into •ortsideration the area of stone workable without an excessive amount of stripping, and also the fact that the present faces and the spawls obtained by the County Council, show a fairly large proportion of inferior stone, the committee concluded that it would be unwise to'make an offer for the quarry at anything aproaching Messrs Parkinson and Co. s figure, and that before making an offer at all, it is advisable to test the stone by means of two or more bores, if arrangements can be made to this end. With the foregoing ,in view, a letter as follows was sent to Messrs Parkinson and Co.: —“ In reference to the quarry on your property at Paerata, we do not feel ourselves in a position to make a definite offer before something is done in the way of ascertaining whether a given quantity of stone is obtainable. With a view to testing the ground, we juesire the privilege cf putting down two or more bores and also that you will keep the question of our Borough becoming the purchasers open for three months while bores are being put down. Trusting that you will see your way to give us a favourable reply.

Re Motion's quarry, undoubtedly a large quantity of good stone underlies the country but the quantity of stripping required after a comparatively small quantity of stone is taken out will be very large, therefore the Committee does not see its wav clear to advise the Council to

00k to this source for a supply of road metal m the near future.

Following on the considerations explained, the Committee resolved to accept Messrs McSheen Bros.’ tender and a contract has been drawn up accordingly. It was pointed out that a reply had- not been received from Messrs Parkinson and Co. The report was received.
