The engineer (Mr W. J. Lopdpll) reported as follows' at Tuesday's meeting of the Manukau County Council Manure Riding. ! General maintenance work has been 1 done on the following roads : | Church Street.—Ten yards scoria , near Mr Watts’ store. Coronation, 1 Walmsley, Favona, Rosella, Station j Buckland, Robertson, Massey and ( McKenzie ■ roads have all been at- | tended 1 to. Pukaki Road.—Three chains at the end of this road opposite Mr White’s cow shed, has received ‘55 yards of scoria, also maintenance on road, j Oruarangi Quarry.—l have terminated the quarrying of stone, after the ■ contractors have procured 1427 -übie I yards. Buckland and ' Massey Road CorI ner.—Messrs Seol and Howie have agreed to give the Council the corner of• land 25/11 on each road, and 15 feet back in property. As it is,the intention of the • owners to ’ erect a store on the corner, this additional wjdth of road will make this corner much safer. I have taken steps to procure the piece' of land, and pians have been« prepared. Pakuranga Riding. General surface work has been carried out from Panmure to the Maun garoa bridge. Pakuranga Hall Frontage—ss cubic I .yards of scoria from Lushington’s ! mountain has been taken by motor, i A few more yards are still necessary I to complete the work. i

Maungaroa Bridge.—The bridge gang are engaged in repairs to this bridge. The old stringers, 18 x 12, have been taken from the site of the old Panmure bridge. These stringers are in good order, and when placed to suit, wheel traffic will make this bridge safe fbr heavy traffic for some years. We have also procured 30 new deck planks and sufficient hand-railing to pat the top structure in goodorder. Papakura Riding.

Ranfurly Road.—A stohe facing has been erected at the outlet from the ,4ft pipe culvert.

new planks have been put in on this bridge.

Alfriston-Ardmore Road. Metal has been rolled, but owing to the amount of wet weather it was impossible to make a very satisfactory job of it. General surface work and metal patching have been carried out as far as material would permit. Smith’s Road from Brookby to Oram’s Road, —On the 21st June, in company with the chairman, Mr A. I). Bell, and Councillor Davies, we inspected this proposed road. Whilst wo consider a much easier grade could be obtained on the Brookby side than the present one, we have doubts concerning the stability of the country on the other side of the ridge. Without having gone into figures or levels, it can be seen from the nature of the country that a road to link up Brookby with Oram’s road would be a costly one to construct.

Hill Road Extension.—l have gone into the cost bf completing this road, according to the specifications. and find it will cost £250. Papatoetoe Riding. \ The Acme crushing plant has been set up on Brown’s road, and has been engaged crushing metal for the approaches to Gillard’s and English Church bridges, also patch metal for the Great South Roach The road leading into the quarry, off Brown’s road, has been partly metalled. After this week’s crushing we 'will proceed crushing for the Manorewa Town Board. A claim has been made on the Public Works’ Department for grants on the two bridges above referred to,

! also for Redoubt road. Whitford-Tamaki Road.—Councillor Waters and I met Councillor Granger and several ratepayers from Whitford on the Saddle, and went over the proposed route. After fully investigating the proposed road, we ar-

rived at the conclusion that the old track would be Cheaper and a better road to construct, with less Subsequent upkeep. I will measure up the road, and take some levels before the meeting, and make a further report on the matter.

Turanga Riding. Whitford Wharf Bridge.—This bridge has been repaired with what timber was available in the district! Granger’s Bridge.—This bridge is completed, and the Government grant of £SO has been applied for. Wairoa (Riding. The bridge plant has been shifted to Campbell’s strearA bridge, and if plans and grants are available, this work could be started during this month. : General surface work and mainten- | ance is being carried out through the ; metalled portion of the Riding. ; Mr H. Blank is prepared to pur- \ chase the old scoop now at Clevedon | for £l2 It has been out of commis- ! sicn for a considerable time. The Borough Council are to find all labour and expenses. Traction Engine Driver.—During

I the month our driver left the em- | ploy of the Council, and his place j has been filled by Mr D. Cairneross. I We are indebted to Mr W. Burnside I for the services of one his drivers j during the week we were without a : msm.
