To-morrow evening everyone interested in the formation of the B-eauti-Society and Arts and Crafts should make a point of attending _at the Masonic Hall. Now is the time to show- practical interest and get a rea! start There is nothing so fascinating and satitsfying to the enthusiast as beautifying and making beautiful things Don’t hug the fire to-morrow evening, but attend this meeting.

On Friday evening about 8.85 the borough firebells sounded an alarm. The brigade were quickly on the scene and found that the fire was confined to a motor truck owned by the Farmers' Union Trading Company, in Messrs J. W. Andrew's new garage in Hall Street. The truck was run out into the road and the flames were quickly subdued. It is understood that the truck, which was only partially damaged, is covered, by Insurance. The cause of the lire is said to be spontaneous combustion.

The flying survey of the proposed canal route linking up the Waikato with Piako river, via the Mangawaro and Tahuna creeks, has shown, that the cost would be prohibitive. It shows rt rise of 110 ft on the saddle, and if locks 1 with a 10ft lift were put in no less than ten on each side would be required. It appears likely that the project of connecting the Waikato with Auckland will be postponed indefinitely now that the eastabout rout plan has failed. The cut at Waiuku would not be merely enormously expensive in itself, but would entail a huge expenditure in canalising the Waikato river from Aka Aka to Huntly. The best course for the Waikato people will be to endeavour to develop the trade through Port Waikato, and to try to get sufficient improvement made in the river to enable light draught craft to navigate it at all seasons of the year.
