FRANKLIN COUNTY COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETJNG. The ordinary monthly meeting of the Franklin County Cuncil was held on Thursday, when there were present Crs, H. Wilcox (deputy-chair-man), E. C. Cuff, J. R„ Lowry, H. 0 Mellsop, 'J. Dean, B. Charles, T. 1 W. Woods, R. T. Reid, the county clerk (Mr Alan P. Day) and the engineer (Mr J. F. McArthur). An apology for absence was received from the chairman (Cr. W. Claud Motion); Cr. H. Wilcbx presided. 6overnment Subsidies. The Valuer-General forwarded foi-m of declaration to enable the Council to obtain the balance of Government subsidy due on 1920-1921 general rates. —The clerk reported that the form had been returned) duly filled in. His action was approved. Petition to Merge Mercer Town Board A petition signed by Mr M. Gallery and 29 other ratepayers of the Mercer Town District requested the Council to exercise the powers conferred on it by section 27 of the Counties Act, 1920, ' whereby the Council may by special order declare the said Mercer town district' abolished and merged in Franklin County. Counsel -for the petitioners, Mr Percy H. Basley, wrote stating that the petition fully complied with the terms - of the Act and the signatories' own more tlpan three-quarters of the rateable property in the said town district. He requested that the petition be published and advertised for one month in order that’ it may be presented to the Council by a depu-j tation of the signatories on or about August 4 next.—The clerk said he had arranged to have the matter attended to and he would present the petition at the August meeting, after he had inspected the( valuation roll, and was satisfied the signatures were. correct.

He agreed to pay a rent and keep same cldar from noxious weeks.—Request declined, as she reserve was used by drovers when driving stock through to the Waikat©.
