SATURDAY’S GAMES.
NEWTON DEFEATS PUKEKOHE
On Saturday last the Newton Football Club's senior team journeyed to Pukekohe to meet the Puke'Kohe Club, and after a very even, fast and exciting game the* visitors left the field victors by 16 points to 8. From the commencement Pukekohe pressed and took> the oval to Newton’s 25, where Olphert and -J. Blake commenced a passing bout. B?ake obtained and went straight for the liny. He outpaced the opposition and scored near the posts. Higginson added the major points. Pukekohe 5 Newton . . . • .. 0 The visitors set up a vigorous attack and Murrell scored a try which Earl converted, making the score: Pukekohe .. - • . . 5 Newton .. •. .. 5 Lomas, a Newton player, who injured his knee had to retire. The scores were unchanged when the whistle went to change over. The second quarter produced some very uninteresting play until the Newton backs got going, but they did not go far, the tackling of the home team being too deadly. Tonkin, Olphert and Blake were seen to advantage in a beautiful passing bout, which saw -J. Blake nearly over. On the wing he was putting in some magnificent work, caving his side time after time. The visitors pressed and took play right to the red goal line, but an infringement gave the home team relief, Noble and Tonkin were instrumental in putting Newton on the defensive, but the visitors cleared and had Pukekohe defending, but again -J. Blake secured and by beautiful individual play saved in a brilliant fashion. For an infringement near half-way Newton were penalised and Higginson put Pukekohe in the lead with a beautiful goal. Half time sounded shortly after with the score unchanged. Upon resuming Newton pressed and De Senna got over. The kick failed. Pukekohe ... • • • • S Newton . . - • .. 6 Even play followed until the home forwards, headed by Fulton, . Short, Pieydell and Higginson, broke away. They swooped down field and took the ball over the line. A race for it between Middlemiss and a Newton player saw the Newton man force down. The Newton three-quarter broke away all on his own, but Campbell at full back, in place of Crum, effected a brilliant tackle. The third quarter ended with the score 8 all. /The game became very fast for the final quarter, each side striving to see re. but nothing eventuated until about five minutes before the call of time, when Newton asserted themselves and Bettis got over twice in quick succession, Halliday converting one. The . game ended: Newton .. . . ~ 16 Pukekohe .. • • & Mr Joe Reynolds capably refereed. For the winners, Earl was the shining light among the backs, while J, Blake, of Pukekohe, was, on the day, the. best back on the field. “ Jimmy" has played a couple of games at wing three-quarter and each time he lias proved that he is norv in his right place. His fielding of the ball, running straight and tackling on Saturday was beautiful and when the next reps, are being selected he cannot be overlooked. Perry at half back shone out, and is now the best half back in Franklin. He is not “gailied” and always goes down to a forward rush. He was severely tested on Saturday against a pack of heavy and brilliant, forwards. The remaining backs all shone out well. W. Short. R. Fulton and Higginson played sterling games in the forward division.
Considering that Pukekohe team had five juniors—Fulton, Perkins, Olphert, Pieyde’l, and Middlemiss —in its ranks,, it did very well against the visitors.

THIRD GRADE
NORTH (15) V. HIGH SCHOOL (9)
The third grade competition was confined on Saturday, when North defeated High School by 15 points to 9. From the outset North attacked and made matters very willing. Tries were scored by Smith, L. Wood, and H. Papesch, while Smith kicked two goals. For High School J. Malcolmson kicked two splendid penalty goals and towards the concluding stages Basil Waters (High School) got over. ,x The game ended as stated above. HINTS FOR THE SCHOOL BOYS. The match for the greater part, was fairly even, but want of knowledge of the game defeated the High School. There are some good boys in the ranks of the school fifteen, but there are many points they have to learn yet before they can expect to win a match. The forwards take things far too calmly; they do not put enough “ginger” into their play. Fast following up is essential, (and .the Pukekohe senior and junior teams should bear this in mind), and when a man is tackled, grass him,. Don’t let him get up and continue playing the ball. Always make sure of your man. Acting the “gentleman stunt,” and let the other man do the work is no good. Do not interpret this to mean “put in the dirt,” but always play the clean, hard game. Combination and commonsense are two hard “men” to defeat. Inspire this into your mind. Training is absolutely necessary. When you catch the bal! do not wait for someone to tell you what to do ; go for the goal line, just as if you were racing for your very existence, and last, buff not least, remember that you are not the only player on your side. Selfishness often brings disaster. Now boys : practice these during the week, and you are sure to defeat South on Saturday next. If not, you should go very close indeed.
