SALARIES OF JUDGES.

The London Daily Express understands that one of the most distinguished members of the bench of judges is seriously considering whether he shall not tender his resignation as a judge and return to the Bar. He declares that it is impossible for him to maintain his family and himself on his present salary in the status approxipriate to a judge of the High Court.. A judge’s salary is £SOOO a year, from which income tax, is,of course, deducted. The majority of the judges have been complaining bitterly of their position in this respect. Only one of them, a rich man, is indifferent, and declines to join in the agitation. It has to be remembered that a judge in the majority of cases has sacrificed an income of four times the amount by leaving the Bar. A leading barrister earns anything between £IO,OOO nnd £20,000 a year. The suggestion has been made that a judge’s salary should be income tax free.
