MANUREWA AFFAIRS.
THE SAWMILL. Mr H. W. Littlewood, of Raetahi, has been staying- at “Gargen,” lyianurewa, for the last three weeks, His visit to Manurewa was in connection with wincllhg up the affairs of thelocal sawmill, the closing clown of which has thrown quite a number out of work and greatly added to the unemployment problem in Manurewa. The timber in the bush has been cut out and this was the reason of the mill closing down. DOCTOR WANTED. The population of Manurewa is increasing rapidly, and the time has come when a doctor is badly needed for the district, as well as a chemist's The Town Board has taken the matter in hand, and an endeavour is being made to have a resident doctor for the place. The population of the restricted area, according to the last census, was about 750, while with the extended area it wiU now be in the vicinity of 1000. LOAN FOR ELECTRIC LIGHT. At its last meeting, the Manurewa Town Board decided to raise a loan of £6OOO for the purpose of instaliing electricity in the Town district, THE SCIIOOL HILLS The work of ‘cutting down the School Hills,/Mar.uiWa, on the Great South Road, is in full swing, anc! the contractor expects to have it completed in about six weeks’ time. The Board intends to tar and seal the road, making a really, good job of it, and hope to make this portion of the South Road an object lesson for other local bodies. ROADS ON JELLICOE ESTATE. The , new road between Jeliicoe and Russell Roads is in a very forward state. The tenders for the formation of roads and footpaths on the Jeliicoe Estate to the amount of abut £2OOO have been accepted. WORKERS’ HOMES. The timber for the two workers’ homes,, to be erected by the Manutev/a Town Board, is now on the ground. LAND FOR BOWLING GREEN, The purchase of an acre and a quarter of land on Hill Road, adjoining the present lawn tennis ground, has' been completed by the Board. A portion of this land will be allocated to the proposed new BowlingClub. ' ' MASSEY ROAD FOOTPATH. The formation of Massey Road footpath is now in hand, amb the tawing and sanding of the path will ho executed when the weather is favourable. ALTERATION TO PREMISES. A fine new concrete front is being erected by Mr T. J. Gorin for Mr H, V. Burton, of Manurewa Supply Stores. Of late, Mr Burton’s business has greatly increased, and. he found that the accommodation was totally inadequate to meet with requirements. The extensive alteration:; will meet the need for some time to come. WEYMOUTH-MANUREWA. The motor ’bus service between the. Manurewa seaside resort, Weymouth, and Manurewa, is proving to be a great success, and is largely patronised. It is of great convenience- to. residents in that locality. THE PICTURE THEATRE. The attendances at the Manurewa Picture Theatre are rapidly increasing. A much higher class of picture is being presented for which the general public shows its appreciation. This' is one of the most up-to-date picture theatfes between Auckland and Hamilton, and no effort is beingspared by the proprietor in making this an ideal place for a pleasant evening.
POST OFFICE. The contractor, Mr T. J, Conn, expects to have the Post Office completed in about a month’s time. The office is well fitted up, and contains a telephone exchange and a letterbox lobby. It is modern in every respect, and when opened will fill a much-needed want of many years’ standing.
