MAGISTRATE’S COURT.
THURSDAYS S3IT J NS. (Before Mr E. W. Burton, S.M.) TWO CHARGES. John Keane, who did not appear, was charged that on May 7. 1921, at Pukekobe West, he was drunk while in charge of a horse and trap on the Pukekohe-Patumahoe Road and also with driving a vehicle without a light. Samuel Loughrin stated that on the date in question he drove a motor car from Patumahoe and when rounding Hart’s corner at Pukekobe West he noticed a horse and trap with no lights. He pulled to the left hand side of the road and the hoi’se came into the steering column, through the wind screen. He stopped the car, and some distance away found Keane under the influence of liquor. Witness asked defendant where his lights were and he replied “Alright, I will see you to-morrow.” He left Keane after this without any further conversation. Defendant was convicted and fined £1 and ordered to pay costs amounting to £2 Is on the first charge, w r hile on the second he was fined £1 and ordered to pay 7s Court costs. PROHIBITION ORDER. An application for a prohibition order against Keane was made by the police. Sergeant Cowan said he had known Keane for the last six years He had previously had a prohibition order issued against him and during the time he found he improved considerably. For three months prior to the laying of the information Keane had been under the influence of liquor several times, and when he became in this condition he was very stupid. To his knowledge he had been refused liquor in the Pukekohe and Patumahoe hotels. He applied for the order as Keane injured liis health through excessive drinking. The order was made on the grounds that it injured Keane’s health.
