Replying to a deputation at W'ellington the Hon. C. J. Parr said that to apply the pruning knife drastically to the system of education would be false economy, and that matters would have to be pretty bad before they reduced the expenditure on education.
At the recent show, the stand of Mr W. S. Russell devoted to vulcanising attracted a great deal of attention. Mr. Russell has fitted an up-to-date plant on his premises to handle this work and is prepared to take orders at any time. The class of work done is stated to be the veryhighest possible.

A correspondent from Dunedin in a letter to the writer of an article oh ‘‘A Prehistoric Race,” published in the Times a week or two ago, while expressing great interest in the subject, takes exception to the statement that there are no hierogUphics extant to give us a clue to these people. There are, he says, in some caves somewhere in the South Island, weird inscriptions carved in the rocks. We have heard of something of the sort, but always understood that, they were painted figures, not inscrintions. It any of our readers
