papakura. The official opening of the golf season took place on Saturday last, when a large number of players and their friends assembled at the pavilion. Mr E. D. McLennan (president) welcomed the visitors and congratulated the club on its healthy financial position, the keenness of its players and the great improvement that had been effected on the links. He had much pleasure in declaring tlie season open, and wished the club members a highly successful time. Mr S. Evans (chairman of the Town Board), in a neat speech, wished the club an enjoyable season and complimented the members on their zeal and sportsmanlike qualities. Games, he said, had a very good influence upon the community of a district, and all were desirous of making Pa pa k urn a most desirable residential area. Miss C. Wood drove the first ball, and then the members played mixed foursomes, the best card being returned by Miss Walker and Mr Crawford. In connection with the resurrection of .the Manukau Rugby Union, it was recently decided to form a Referees’ Association. Accordingly, a meeting y/as convened and ten members enrolled. Mr Ciffe, of the Auckland Referees’ Association, was in attendance, and discussed the rules with those candidates desirous of qualifying n.s referees. Mr J. E. Elliott was appointed chairman, and Mr R. Mack secretary, of the new body, and referees for the first round of the matches were arranged. The next meeting was fixed for the 28th hist, when several new members are to be proposed. A very pleasing ceremony took place at the local school last week, when Mr D. R. Hamilton (secretary of the Franklin A. and P. Society) attended and presented the “Claude Rountree” silver cup to Master Robt. Sprngg. the successful competitor at the February Show. The school will hold, the cup lor the year, wiien it is again open for 'minpetition. The fixtures for the Manukau Union began on Saturday last, when Clevedon seniors beat Manurewa by 37 to nil. Hunua beat Papakura in both grades, the seniors winning by 18 to G, and the juniors by 11 to 3. The remaining fixtures and referees aic as follows: - May 28th.—Clevedon v. Hunua (Mr Conn). May 28.th.—Clevedon v. Hunua (juniors), Mr Rowe. May 28th.—Papakura v. Manurewa (Mr Duder).
