The Franklin Rugby Union’s competitions opened on Saturday in beautiful weather. Fairly large crowds assembled on the varous grounds to see the respective matches. Quite a number of last year’s players again donned their club’s colours, as well as a number of newcomers. In both grades the players were on the green side and consequently brilliant play was conspicuous by its absence. The senior game, Onewhero v. Patumahoe, played ‘at Patumahoe, was a very mediocre exhibition, but both teams are bound to improve as the season progresses'! SENIOR. ONEWHERO, 5, V. PATUMAHOE, 3. Patumahoe won the toss and Dromgool (Onewhero) set the oval in motion against the sun. Play was somewhat slow and ragged, and confined to, more or less, a forward scramble. Onewhero were penalised and C. Wilson goaled: Patumahoe 3, Onewhero 0. The score was unaltered when half time was sounded. Soon after the resumption of play Onewhero forwards rushed the oval to Patumahoe’s line, where a series of scrums resulted. From one of these Dromgool obtained and fell over. Potoa Hira made no mistake with the kick: Onewhero 5, Patumahoe 3. The final quarter was full of exciting moments. Towards the finish the home team made desperate efforts to score, but the visitors’ defence proved too sound. The whistle sounded with play in Patumahoe twenty-five. The game ended: Onewhero 5, Patumahoe -3. Mr Bert. Clarke refereed. BOMBAY, 11, V. TUAKAU, 3. This was a fairly good game for the opening of the season. The Bombay team, which includes five of last year’s juniors, proved too superior and left the field victors by 11 points (tries by Casey and Markham, the latter being converted by Brownlee, and a penalty goal by A. Wray) to 3 points (a penalty goal by Bert Leighton. Mr E. Pollock proved an efficient referee. JUNIOR MATCHES. Bombay had little difficulty in defeating Tuakau by 28 points to 8. Mr R. J. Glasgow carried the whistle. The match, Onewhero v. Patumahoe, was played at Onewhero in delightful weather conditions. The game resulted in a win for Onewhero, who scored 40 points to their opponents' 3. For the winners B. Clarke. C. Baker. T. Gray, M. Thompson, J. Kane and White played well. The visitors all battled hard, but were up against it from the kick-off. The visitor? expressed their satisfaction at the entertainment provided by the home team at half time and at the conclusion of the match. Mr J.
