DISTRICT NEWS.

MANUREWA HOUSEHOLDERS’ MEETING. The attendance was small, perhaps owing to the counter attraction of a circus. Mr. W. T. Cox was voted to the chair. The number on the roll was 387, but owing to sickness, etc., during the year the average was 244. There had been nc less than nine alterations in the staff during the year. Notwithstanding this, the inspector’s reports were very creditable to the head teacher (Mr D. W. McNaughton) an chords assistants. The status of 'tfteCßchooi has been raised to grade 5, T-fee outgoing committee has left its mark on the township for many a long year to come, in that by its persistent advocacy two infant rooms In bi*ck are now in course of erection. TSicse are the nucleus of what in time to come will be a large brick structure to hold 500 children. The district should be grateful to the local contractor (Mr T. W. Bell) for his spirited action in sending in a tender acceptable to the Board. The teacher at Weymouth, Miss Keaney, has done good work during the past year. The Board has purchased a site at Takanini for a school.

The committee, recognising that children learn by eye as well as by are and are greatly influenced by their surroundings, allocated £lO for the purchase of pictures —£8 for Manurewa and £2 for Weymouth. A ananimous vote of thanks was accorded Mr C. H. Lupton for the good work which he had accomplished for the school during the past year as chairman.

Smith (treasurer), C. H. Lupton (chairman) and Mrs A. Palmer. A hearty vote of thanks to Mr W. T. Cox for presiding brought the meeting to a close, TUAKAU. At the last ordinary meeting of the Tuakau Town Board, Mr G. Arrewsmith reported having attended the sitting of the Inland Waterways Commission and on behalf of the Board, protested against the proposal that the Town District should be rated for the construction or maintenance of the proposed canal. He was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for attending the Commission on the motion, of Messrs Sims and MecUand. It v* as reported at the monthly messier of the Tuakau Town Board thatfmformation had not yet been received as to the appointment of an inspector of health for the district. The clerk was instructed to write the Department asking if an appointment had. been made and if so the name of the inspector. It was stated that in the event of an outbreak of some disease the Board did not knov who to communicate with. The Tuakau Town Board proposes to send a couple- of remits for inclusion on the annual conference of the Municipal Association's agenda paper. At the last meeting of the Town Board Mr- Sim moved: That a remit be forwarded to the effect that powers be given to local bodies to compel dedication by the owners of si! private roads used by the public as public highways, subject to the local bodies’ requirements. He point-

ed* out that some local bodies expended moneys on private roads used by the public as public thoroughfares, net knowing at the time the road was net a dedicated one. —Mr Arrow-

«nitli. moved: That a town district be granted the same rating powers that have been accorded boroughs under the Municipal Corporations Act, 1.320.
