TUESDAY, MAY 3, 1921. SAME LABOUR AND THE ELECTIONS.

One of the most encouraging signs we have noted for some time has been the attitude of what is generally known as “sane” Labour towards the extremist section, as shown by the returns of the municipal elections all over the Dominion. It may be safely conceded that the population of the cities and towns has a very large majority of manual workers, and that had they worked in combination they would easily have swept the polls. The candidates generally were men prominently known as holding pronounced views on labour matters, their organisation in many places was excellent, and every effort had been made to enroll their supporters, but the results of their efforts have been almost nil. In practically every place they have failed to gain ground—in many cases they have lost the seats they adreadv had. The explanation of their ill-success is plain. It is evident that the more sober-minded among them have no time for the wild-cat schemes and extravagances of the extremists and the establishment of this fact at a time when the finances of the Dominion, the local bodies and the private citizen require the most careful handling, cannot but give general satisfaction. .

“We nothing extenuate, nor aught set down in malice.”
