SONS OF NEW ZEALAND.
(Written after Gallipoli by A.J.R.) Sens of New Zealand, the war-call is sounding, Honour and duty now bid. you arise; Hark to the crash of armed millions contending; Rending earth’s entrails, and piercing the skies. Liberty, honour and freedom are threatened With ruthless oppression and tyranny’s chain; Death to tthe tyrant who strives to enslave us, Death to the myrmidons vile in his train.
Woeful the track of the lawless ‘invader, Pillage and torture and murder and lust; Women and children, and sires hoaryheaded, Ruthlessly trampled and ground to the dust.
Death lurking deep in the mined ocean ridges, Death-dealing bolts from the clouds unaware; Infants at suckle and age’s frail dotage, All in the murderers’ mad hate-car-nage share.
Smoke from the flaming homes heavenward mounting, Blood of the innocent drenching the ground; Sternly is calling for swift retribution— Sons of New Zealand leap forth at the sound
Rush to the battle inspired by the memories Of comrades now mouldering on~ Gallipoli; Fired by the spirit of Anzac’s dead heroes That sleep on those slopes of the Aegean Sea.
Sheath not the blade till the tyrant aggressor, Foul with the stains of his crimes, lieth low; Loud ring your battle cry! ; ye who for freedom die! Pakeha, Maori, in fight with the foe. Sons of New Zealand, the war-call is soundßusg, i Honour anti duty now bid you arise; Hark to the crash of armed millions contending, s Rending earth’s entrails and piercing the skies.
