ATHLETICS.
MILITARY SPORTS. There was a large attendance at the military sports held on the racecourse reserve, Waiuku, on Saturday week, and, judging by the large crowd and the interest evinced in the various events, the function promises to become one of the most popular annual outings. Competitors were present from Auckland, Clevedon and Patumahoe, the local boys, however, were able to hold their own against all comers. All the events were keenly contested and some interesting finishes witnessed. The arrangements were well canned out, due to the efforts of the organiser, Major M. Aidred, assisted by a strong committee of willing workers. Lieut. Col. A. G. McKenzie, D. 5.0., Major J. Herrold. D. 5.0., Major A. M. Barriball, Lieut. G. F. Yerex, N.Z.S.C., and Seigt.-Major Milne, N,Z;S.C.. acted as judges. Capt. O. Henry as starter; Sergt. F. Knight and Sergt.-Major E. Henry, clerks of the course; and Messrs Claud Motion, C. Molloy and E.Q.M.S. Robertson, W.Q., as timekeepers. Amongst the visitors present were:—Col. Porter, C.M.G. (the officer commanding the Auckland district). Major Jolly, M.8.E., Capt. Quarterly, Sergt, Blackburn and Lieut. Wilkinson. The 3rd Auckland Mounted Band was in attendance and enlivened the proceedings with a number of choice selections, which were much appi’eciated, and added greatly to the enjoyment of the day’s outing." During the afternoon there were two accidents, but fortunately without serious results. In the Victoria Cross race Trooper Short, in dismounting, was dragged by his mount, and in the eloping event,. Miss Larsen’s horse got out of control, Miss Larsen jumping off as the animal was going at top, and holding on to the reins, was dragged several yards.
