RIVER COMMISSION.
DEALING WITH THE WASKATO. The Rivers Commission, which commenced its sittings at Mercer over a week ago, has now taken evidence at Ngaruawahia, Hamilton, Pirongia and Cambridge.
Many witnesses have been examined and a great deal of knowledge of the river obtained.
At the Hamilton sitting the president of the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce gave very lengthy evidence, but a great deal of it was really beside the question.
At the conclusion of Mr Parr’s evidence, Mr Wily asked whether, if a canal connecting Hamilton with the Hauraki Gulf by way of the Mangawharo creek and the Piako river were constructed, it would not serve the Waikato residents better than the Waikato and Manukau route.
Mr Parr replied that if such a scheme were feasible it would undoubtedly be preferrable.
The Commission will also sit at Waiuku next week.
