PAPATOETOE TOWN BOARD

BUSINESS DONE ON TUESDAY. IMPROVEMENTS TO ROADS. A meeting of the Papatoetoe Town Board was held on Tuesday evening, the chairman, Mr Arthur W. Hall, presiding. There were also present: Messrs Watson, Timewell, McCullough, Bryand, Smith and Death. Road Improvement.—A report on Mulcock’s road, submitted by the engineer, was read and considered. The Works Committee who had had a look at the progress of the formation were convinced that the work was being carried out in a very unsatisfactory manner. Mr Mulcock had approached the Board recently asking that certain lequirements be temporarily suspended, among which he desired that the footpath on one side where there were no buildings at present, might be left for some time. The requests were not allowed, and in view of the manner in which the road was being constructed the Board decided to pull together and more stringently enforce the bylaws regulating road construction.

Station Road.—The engineer gave an estimate of the work that would be incurred in re-forming Station road near its junction with Mulcock’s read.. There was a ridge which needed grading off, but in view of the approach of winter he suggested that it be left till, spring and that it be temporarily improved to meet immediate requirements of traffic: With regard to the widening of Station road from the station gates to the bridge, it was decided that tenders for the work he called immediately. Foreman’s Report. The foreman’s report showed that a considerable amount of work had recently been done. He had been favoured in this connection by the die weather which had broken only during the last few days. The leport showed that the footpath from the station to Coronation road had been formed up and tarred; that part of Station road between the Town Hall and the junction with Wallace road had been formed up and scoria put on; that Wallace road footpath was tarred and shelled; the footpath on the Great South Road from the school fo the junction with Kolmar road had been cleaned up and scoria put on. Members were very pleased with the progress that the men had made and they complimented the foremen in highly appreciative terms. Gorse on Roads—Owners of properties where gorse was encroaching on the roads were to be notified to clear their frontages. It was decided that necessary work on Park Avenue was to be proceeded with immediately. Letters. —A letter was received fiom Mr Kendall asking for a footpath from his house to the station on Wyllie road. He was to be notified that the work would be proceeded with in the matter of widening the road and making the necessar-v improvements. Mi Smytheman wrote drawing attention to the fact that the footpath on the road joining Rangitoto Avenue with Kolmar road was becoming overgrown and should be cleaned as there was now a considerable population in that part of the town and building was going ahead at a rapid rate. The Works Committee was to investigate and effect the necessary repairs. Mr Briddick, a newcomer to Papatoetoe, approached the Board asking for information concerning Portage road, which was in a bad condition. This road was taken over when the Town Board was formed and It was the boundary between the Town Board and the Manukau County Council. It had been arranged that the Council keep it in order and the Board pay half the expenses. That was explained to him. The secretary had written several times drawing the attention of the Council to the matter.

Scoria Truck Borrowed. —Application from a member of the Manukau County Council to borrow some of the Town Board’s trucks which were at present at McLoughlin’s quarry in order to get scoria was granted. Breaking Up Footpath.—Builders and carriers crossing and breaking up the footpaths at their entrances with loads of timber were to oe notified that they must repair the damage.

Grant of Land from Orphan Home Trust Board, A letter wa.s received from the Orphan Home Trust Board stating that they confirmed their previous verba! promise to give the piece of land •which had been asked for to erect a memorial according to the plan submitted. The clerk was instructed when replying to draw their attention to the wording of the latter as no promise, verbal or otherwise, had ever been received. The land would not now be required for the purpose

of erecting on it a memorial, but the Town Board hoped they would see their way clear to give it unconditionally for district improvement purposes. The clerk submitted a balancesheet prepared and unaudited showing that there was a debit balance of a “little over £3OO. As the Board started with no funds and as a lot of work had been done and some necessary plant purchased it was thought very satisfactory. Accounts amounting to £212 13s 4d were passed for payment.
