FRANKLIN RACING CLUB.

INAUGURAL MEETING. A WET DAY. The Franklin Racing Club’s Inaugural race meeting was held at PukeKone on Saturday last when there was an attendance of about 2000, including a large number who arrived from Auckland by special train. Among those present were Sir Frederick Lang, M.P. for Manukau and speaker of the House of Representatives, and Mr R. F. Bollard, M.P. for Raglan. The morning of the races broke fine but dull and it was expected that the weather would hold good for the day. Unfortunately after the running of the second race, the Maiden Handicap, heavy rain set ir. accompanied by a stiff north-west-erly gale and continued throughout the afternoon. The afternoon’s pleasure was thus marred by the unfavourable weather conditions. There was little or no shelter except a few tents used by the jockeys and officials, and the majority of patrons were wet through long before the commencement of the last race. When matters were at their worst, the jockeys riding were consulted as to their opinion regarding the safety of the racing track, and this being entirely favourable the question of postponement did not afterwards present itself. In s’,)ite of the advmse cii cumstances the committee maintained a high spirit throughout and one and all did their best for the success of the gathering. Every member of the executive worked assiduously and were ably supported by enthusiastic workers including Messrs Harry Hayr, H. B. Massey and C. Goldsbro. Mr E. V. Sutherland acted as judge in place of Mr. R. B. Lusk, and Mr J. Vincent starter in place of Mr C- O’Connor, while the other officials were all at their posts

In spite of the conditions, the events were got off well to time The Pukekohe Brass Band enlivened proceedings considerably and despite the pelting rain rendered an excellent •'programme. The course itself was in good order, out towards the finish began to get cut about.
