ROAD WORKS IN FRANKLIN.

COUNTY ENGINEER’S REPORT. At Thursday’s meeting of the Franklin County Council, the engineer (Mr J. F. McArthur) reported as follows: Government Grants and Subsidies. Proposals have been submitted to the Public Works Department for works under the following grants and subsidies, viz.:—Awhitu [to Orua Bay via Tram Gully, £ for £, £200; Awhitu Wharf to Central, £ for £, £500; Drury to W-niuku, via Karaka, £ for £, £780; Graham’s Beach to Palmer’s, £IOO, free; Hamilton road, Buckland, £l5O £ Cor £ and £525. free; Kohekohe to I'e Tora, £l5O free; Patumahoe to Waiau, £ for £, £585; Pollok post office to Awhitu Central, £3OO £ for £ and £l5O free; Stewart Cowan road, Hunua, £ for £, £200; Stubb’s road. £235 £ for £. and £SOO free.

Other proposals for -the expenditure of grants and subsidies for road and bridge works appearing on the 19201921 estimates are being prepared and will be submitted for approval at an earlj’ date.

All claims for payment on works carried out under Government money have been sent in and the work inspected by an engineer of the Public Works Department. In each instance the work has been approved and the claims recommended for payment. Engineering Surveys. During the past month engineeringsurveys have been made as follows: — Grant’s road, Karaka, 42 chains; Wai-au-Papakura road, 26 chains! Otaua bridge site and approaches: Waiuku Otaua main road 12 chains; PaerataRunciman road at Stewart’s Hill, 22 chains; creamery road, Hunua, 25 chains; Paparimu to Maungatawhiri, widening road (flood damage). Land Surveys for New Roads and Deviation. e Surveys of new roads and deviations previously authorised have been undertaken when the necessary plans have been approved' s by the Survey Department steps will be taken to have these deviations and roads legalised. The surveys referred to are as fol-lows:-—Deviation at five corners, Pukekohe-Waiuku road; deviation at Cairn’s Hill, Pukekohe Eatft., to Ramarama road; new access road to White Cliff's, Waiau, and reserve; new road between Whangarata and Pokenc, along old railway line. Information has been obtained and to enable further surveys to be undertaken, these will be gone on with at once.

Crushing Plants. The No. 1 crushing plant is at present engaged crushing stone for the Patumahoe to Wniau road, ts The No. 2 crushing- plant is crushing stone obtained from Grimmer’s quarry, which will - be completed shortly. Therneycroft IVSotcr Trucks. The four trucks are engaged conveying metal from the No. 1 crushing plant to the Patumahoe-Waiau roadGood progress is being made with the work, between four and five chains of road being metalled daily. Teams Pla-jis. The No. 1 county teams plant is completing the formation of Paerata to Tuhimata road. This road has now been formed for its whole -length, an approximate distance of 2W miles. It is proposed '.to send this plant to Tramway road, Puni, at an early date. No. 2 teams plant is at present reforming and improving the Beach road Papakura, to Karaka. No. 3 teams plant is working on At tewoll’s road, Puni, and when finished there will be commencing other road improvement in the Pukekohe We'sft and Mauku Ridings. Works Generally, Works generally throughout the county are proceeding satisfactorily. I place before your Council 26 contracts which have been. signed by the contractors and now require the signature of two members and common seal affixed. Finai Payments on Contracts. Final payments appear in the list of contracts presented to your Council for payment at to-day’s meeting, viz:—No. 331, for the supply and delivery of spawls, Great South road, Razorback to Pokeno, A. J. Coombs: No. 391 for forming and culverting portion Papakura-W-aiau road, T. 11. O'Brien; No. 392, for forming Karaka to Papakura road, Black bridge to Coster’s corfter, T. H. O’Brien; No. 434, for the supply and delivery 'of spawls Waiuku-Drury road, T. and J. Conroy; No. 455, for the supply and delivery of spawls, Great South road, at Drury, J. M. Cossey: No. 458, for forming and culverting portion of Ostrich road, Helvetia Estate, T. M. Short; No. 478, for quarrying and spawling stone at Murphy’s quarry,. Purapura,. J. Fraser. Owing to pressure- of work during the past month. I have found it impossible to collect data to enable me to furnish reports on a number of matters which came before previous meetings of your Council. These, however, will be attended to at the earliest possible date. The report was adopted.
