FENWICK-NEWELL TENOR.

CONCERT RECITAL MONDAY, APRIL 4th. Pukekohe people will be pleased to hear that Mr Fenwick Newell, the Canadian tenor, who delighted Chautauqua audiences last year, hut who v/as unable to appear this season on account of illness at that time, has consented to give a concert, at the request of his friends, and will appear with his company on Monday night, April 4th, in the Premier Hall. Mr Newell will be assisted by Miss Gertrude Hober, the talented violinist, and Mrs Fenwick-Newell at thei piano. Mr Newell has just completed a successful tour of the Dominion, and expects to sail for America on 12th April by the Niagara. Quoting from the “Timaru Herald” : “Timaru was unfortunate last year in being baulked of hearing Mr Newell, owing to indisposition, and its misfortune could not be appreciated till Mr Newell was heard yesterday. It was the expressed opinion of many last evening that Mr Newell is one of the finest tenors heard here, and it is certainly difficult to recall a vocalist of class, who met with a more hearty reception, or who deserved it so richly. His gift has been superbly developed, while his sympathetic tastes and intelligent interpretation of classic, as well as simple themes, [stamped him as an artist in the first flight.”

The “Wanganui Chronicle” in part : says : “Fenwick Newell and party provided the musical programme, and scored a great success, Mr Newell in particular finding it difficult to get away, so insistent were the.encores.”

“Otago Times,” Dunedin, inter alia, stated : “These performers appeared irf” a wide variety of items, ranging from operatic selections to popular and humourous ballads, and over all the; did, there was a distinctive charm which made their offerings wholly pleasurable. Mr Newell possesses a lyric tenor voice of good quality and flexibility and admirable range, and lie sings with nice expression and a thorough understanding of both music and words. Miss Hober plays the violin skillfully and tastefully, and Mrs Newell is a helpful and sympathetic aceompaniest.”

“Southland Times,” Inverargill r “Last year Mr Newell created a very favourable impression with local audiences. His re-appearance yesterday was a very welcome one, and once more he delighted those whose pleasure it was to hear him.”

“N.Z. Times,” Wellington : “An admirable concert was submitted by Mr Fenwick-Newell. A voice of great volume, yet with most pleasing soft tones.”
