GREAT SOUTH ROAD.

PAPAKURA’S PORTION. CONTRACT LET FOR THE WORK. One of the worst portions of the Great South Road, between Mercer and Auckland, that running through the Papakura Town Board’s district, is shortly to receive attention, a fact which will be gladly received by those who use the thoroughfare, especially motorists. On various occasions the Town Board had endeavoured to have the work done by contract, but unfortunately, no doubt owing to the scarcity of labour, no one tendered for the work. Steps were then taken to have the job carried out by day labour but the district engineer of the Public Works Department intimated that the Board could not deal with the Great South Road by day labour and expend the Government grant, until satisfactory proposals for expending the subsidy had been submitted to and approved by his department. It was reported that since last meeting Mr H. Blank had agreed to do the work and his tender for 4s 9d per cubic yard was accepted. , Mr Blank expects to proceed with the work during this week.
