WATER MAINS ON HUNUA GORGE ROAD.
COUNCIL OPPOSES APPLICATION. At a previous meeting of the Franklin County Council the Papakura Town Board was refused permission to lay pipes down the Hunua Gorge Road from the Town, Board’s headworks situated in the gorge. At yesterday’s meeting of the Council, the Papakura Town Board stated that its engineers, Messrs Gannon and Worley, had made another survey for the lien of water mains and have reported that though they were doing all they could to keep from laying water mains on the Hunuo Gorge Road, they would be compelled in certain places, to use the road. The Board pointed out that as the Council was averse to such an action, they had been directed, in accordance with section 234 of the Municipal Corporations Act and the eleventh schedule thereof, to send asking that the Minister of Public Works act as arbitrator in the matter.
The chairman mentioned that the Council would have to oppose the application. It had spent an enormous amount of money on the Hunua Gorge Road and there was a possibility that if mains were laid clown the Gorge Road it would damage the road considerably, and would interfere with the traffic while the work was being done.
I f was decided to hand the Town Board’s letter to the county solicitor to deal with, with instructions that the Council opposes the laying of water mains along the road.
