“ You can ! generally hear more than you read,” said a deputatioriist, at the last meeting of the Franklin County Council, when requesting permission to remain in the Council Chambers while a matter was under discussion.

Northerners have been much more fortunate than their southern neighbours during this summer, for the rain which fell some two 'or three weeks ago, if it did not altogether prevent paddocks from assuming u brown tinge, certainly removed the possibility of anything that could be compared with a drought. Farmeis generally expect something severe in February, and make provision for this period by growing catch crops. But in the south of the Auckland pro\ince and north of the Wellington these rains were never felt. Consequently the grass is literally as brown as the load, and the one cry of residents in the district is for a drop of rain. But is is to be feared that the position is beyond hope for dairymen this season, as cows are rapidly going off in their mill: supply.

Ah advertisement announcing the forthcoming winter show appears in to day’s issue.

This morning a water main burst in Edinburgh Street and for some time- gave quite a geyser effect. The borough workmen quickly remedied the defective plug.

Several caustic comments on the condition of" King Street have been passed by residents lately. The amount of filth which covers this fine roadway is astonishing. Business people probably have a claim against the Borough Council for damage to stocks caused by dust and flies which emanate from this dirty roadway.

At the last meeting of the Franklin County Council, Cr. E. C. Cuff urged that steps be taken before the winter set in to patch some of the roads in the Pukekohe West and Mauku ridings. He pointed out that there were a number of pot holes in some of the thoroughfares.—The engineer was instructed to attend to the matter.
