RE CHAUTAUQUA LICENSE FEE.
Sir,—l read Mr Perkins’ letter in last Tuesday’s paper, in reply to Mr. Coady. For down right arrogance Mr Perkins takes a lot of beating. Because Mr Coady does not see eye to eye with him he thinks him nariow minded. In the first place, anybody with any sense knows that the members of the Chautauqua party a v e not coming here and giving these entertainments for the benefit of their health. They receive handsome remuneration. In the second place it is a Yankee idea (and from my experience of the Americans they are all out after the almighty dollar), and only consider its success from a financial standpoint, instead of from an educational one. I do not know where Mr. Perkins made his inquiries about other towns not charging ground rents, also about the civic leceptions; perhaps it was over the ’phone. I have been in several towns where they have given entertainments and they received no such reception. If it was a citizen affair, why were they not taken into Mr Perkins’ conv fidence instead of him selecting a few of his friends to run the show. The Technical School we know about As a business proposition, the council were quite right, in my opinion, in charging the £t> and should have enfcrced their claim, instead of giving way to the clap trap talk of the chairman of the Pukekohe Chautauqua Committee. —I am, etc., CIVIS.
(Part of “Civis’” letter has been deleted, being, in our opinion, rather too personal. Correspondents should avoid personalites when making use of these columns. —Ed., Times.)
