BOROUGH COUNCIL.
FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. The usual Ifortnightly meeting of the Pukekohe Borough Council was held on Wednesday evening last, when there were present:—His Worship the Mayor (Mr. C. K. Lawrie), Crs. R. Bilkey, J. Morrow, H. Keith, R. McGough, A. P. Daysh, G. H. Armstrong and D. R. Hamilton. Pukekohe High School In reply to a letter from the Council to the Prime Minister asking that the Thames express be allowed to stop at Papakura for the convenience of Papakura scholars who will be attending the new High School, the Premier stated that he would confer with the General Manager of Railways with a view to having the request complied with.—Received.
- Fire Brigade, An application was received from the Pukekohe Fire Brigade for a nve years’ 1 service medal for Fireman Leslie Mitchell, also for two years, service badges for Captain Brown, Foreman Adams and Secretary Rollinson. The secretary also wrote stating that the United Fire Brigades’ Association of New Zealand is holding a monster demonstration and conference at Napier in the first week in March this year, to which the Pukekohe Brigade propose to send a team, and asking for support from the Council. —Cr. Armstrong said that some other boroughs had voted £lO. — The Mayor moved that the accounts for the medals be passed for payment and that £lO be voted towards expenses.—-Agreed? to. • Boose’s Bush. The Mayor, speaking on the above matter, said he thought it advisable to again bring this matter before the ratepayers. Scooters on Streets, A councillor drew attention to the paragraph in the “Times” relating to the nuisance of children riding scooters about the streets. He had witnessed a very narrow escape from an accident by one of the venturesome youths.—The Mayor said the Council did not want to be too drastic with children who must have their fun, but it was advisable to warn them not /to use the main street. Orainage, A letter was received from the State Advances Office re the proposed £IO,OOO loan for drainage purposes as follows:—“We have to say that upon examining the voting paper used we notice the terms of the loan is stated to be 10 years. The regulations issued under the Local Bodies’ Loans Act, 1913, provide that loans granted by this office to local authorities shall be for a term of 36 *4 years only.”
The Mayor spoke very strongly on the necessity for action in this matter of drainage. The present difficulty with the sanitary system made this quite imperative and he thought it would be advisable to take a new poll for the amount necessary and proceed with the work. Cr. Morrow said he thought it would only be necessary to ask the ratepayers to extend the time of the previous loan from 10 years to 36 years. The matter was finally left in the hands of the Finance Committee to deal with and report. Genera!. It was decided that the Finance Committee wait upon the Prime Minister while he is in Pukekohe in reference to financial matters.
