Week-end Camps. Members of both Olakou and Burns Battalions will bo 'u eamji this week-end. Olakou will be located on Us sector,_ carrying out various operations from tile bivouac. The response from the men to enter tire voluntary camp has been very good, between 400 and 500 coming forward. Burns Battalion will bo based at a local military camp. The response was again good, but noj, quite so good as with Otakou. Neither Flagstaff nor Cargill Battalions could raise sufficient volunteers to make battalion camps worthwhile, but officers and n.c.o.s of C Company, Cargill Battalion, will hold a camp. Realistic Battle. Full .scale and realislc manoeuvres will bo canned out this week-end in South Canterbury by Territorials and Home Guam. The exercises will comprise mainly tire repelling of presumed enemy landings in rorcc.at various points on the coast. The Homo Guard will hold the enemy landings until mobile Territorial units arrive and assist in driving the invaders back to the sea. In all (ho operations live ammunition will bo used, this development being intended to give the men some idea oi tbo din that accompanies, a modern battle. Riflemen will carry ball ammunition, instead of blanks, and there will be live amimiimion in me bells and magazines of machine guns. There will be bombardments and barrages laid down by, 18 and 25-ponnders. Mortar fire will play "a part, aim selected personnel will throw grenades. The tactical use of smoke bombs ami shells will be demonstrated. In the repelling of the landings all arms will discharge a deadly barrage into the midst of (be retreating enemy. Carry On 1 A desire to continue Home Guard training was expressed in a resolution carrier at a largo .meeting of residents and uonic Guardsmen at the Southland coalmining township of Ohai. The resolution stated chat-alter carrying out active training for two and a-half years, and in view oi the critical situation in Uie Southwest Pacific and elsewhere, the Ohai 1 unit of Home Guard should continue its activities so that it will be prepared and leady to stand with other units in the defence of New Zealand. Presentation of Colours.
■ An unusual Home Guard ceremony took place at.Oamaru last Saturday, when the South Hill Company was presented with colours. The flag was presented by Mrs George Webb (president of the South Hill Women's 'lnstitute), and was received by Captain I. T. Catto. The dedication ceremony was conducted by the chaplain, the Eev. W. Lawson Marsh, and brief addresses were given by Lieutenant-colonel J. F. Tonkin, Captain Catto, Mrs Webb, and (he mayor, Mr J. C. Kirkness. Mr Kirknesa said that, the colours would give the officers and men a fresh incentive to carry on their important work, and he congratulated the institute on its realisation of the significance of a flag to a regiment. As the, colours were run up the flagpole and broken out the Oamaru Garrison Municipal Band gave, the Royal salute. Taieri Battalion. The grouff director, Lieutenant-colonel F. B. Adams, accompanied by the, acting C. 0., Captain J. W. Thomson, and the adjutant, visited portion of the sector on Sundaylast. An inspection of the recently-com-pleted rifle ranges of A Company was undertaken, Colonel Adams conveying to all concerned his congratulations on the excellent construction of the ranges, and the high standard of efficiency shown. Later in the day the party visited B Company, who were on full-scale manoeuvres, and an interesting . time was spent in conversing with both attackers and defenders. The battalion is to enjoy a well-earned rest this week-end (Labour Day) and no parades or working parties have been ordered. ■ ■ • Cargill Battalion. Reserve (Vital Point Guard) Platoon.— Tho platoon will parade at the north end of the Gardens to-morrow, at 1000 hours. The prepared syllabus tor the day’s operations, including fieldoraft and minor lactic exercises, will be carried out on the hill sector. Web equipment is not required. Guardsmen will carry rations for one meal. C Company.—The company will parade on Tuesday at the N.E.V. Town Hall at 1915 hours and will march to (he Training College in lower Union street, where moving pictures on modern warfare will be screened by kind permission of the college principal, This should be a most interesting evening, and a full attendance is expected. Tho company will dismiss at the Training College. Dress, uniform without webb equipment. As the officers and n.c.o.s are in camp this week-end there will be no parade to-morrow. Lines of Communication. A section of No. 29 Company paraded wild No. 30 Company at the rifle range ii.se Sunday and assisted with marking. T 1 n.c.o. class met on Monday evening to hear a lecture by Captain A. V. Gaia on orders, reports, and signals. There is no convoy work for the members this weekm, bub a full-day parade is to be 'mid at Logan Park 10-mofrow at 0830 hours to complete the c n {.any shoot on the long range Usual mess gear to be brought. No 30 Company paraded :ast Sunday ac Pe'ichet Bay range, when the long-range musketry course was fired. Conditions, for the shoot were ideal and the general standard of. range discipline and scoring was extremely satisfactory. Sgt. 1. G. Hodding obtained top .score, registering 157 out of a possible 180 On Monday night the n.c.o. class enjoyed an interesting and instructive leclure on message forms and abbreviations, and on Wednesday night the signallers paraded tor further practice and instruction. To-morrow those who have not undergone their long-range shoot will parade for same at 08-15 hours at Logan Park, usual mess '(gear to be brought. There will be no n. class on Monday 'evening and tho next company parade is called tor 1930 hours on Wednesday. 28(11, at the Drill Hall.
