POTENTIAL WAR WORKERS At Lhe monthly meeting of the Otago Boys* and Girls’ High Schools Board yesterday afternoon, correspondence from lhe rectors was before members dealing with the question of leave tor boys tor essential war or farm work, and the extension ot the annual holidays at the end of the year. The board, over which Mr W. R. Krugh presided, laid down the following condition*, for the granting of leave: — Except in the case of country boys, no leave will be granted before December J, and then only in special circumstances. Leave for shearing, fruit picking, and other urgent work will be granted in lebruarv only where it can be shown that it would be justified by the urgency of the work. Leave, either in December or in February, whether for town or country boys, will be granted only on the written request of the parent, supported by a written statement from the employer to the board stating the nature of the work and 'why it is regarded as essential. All applications are to be made in good time before the commencement of the. proposed leave, and ate to stale the period for which leave is desired. No leave will be given except with the approval of the rector, who is requested by {lie board to lake into account the importance of ensuring that the boy’s education shall not suffer. The question of extending the Christmas vacation and the cutting down of the term holidays or the deletion of one period was also discussed by the board, and finahy tno following motion, moved by Mrs D. G. McMillan, was carried: — “ That in view of the labour shortage, the department be asked to give leave to defer the opening of the secondary schools to March, and, if necessary, to shorten the term holidays.” H was also decided to notify other boards and ask for their support to the proposal.
